How much white is excessive?

For showing a dartmoor pony?

He's fully registered (green passport) but everywhere I've looked about showing dartmoor ponies it says that excessive white markings should be discouraged. However it doesn't tell you how much white is excessive. He has a diamond shaped white snip on his nose and a white marking on his foot.

So, does anyone know how much white is excessive?

That doesn't sound massively excessive. The fell breed description says a similar thing and my boy has a little bit of white on the bottom of both back legs - I don't let it bother me! I plan to show him but I know at the end of the day especially if I was to do in-hand if another pony was identical to him except that is had no white it would probably beat him. However I would hope that in a performance class (ridden or wh) it would make even less difference. However it's showing - anything could happen!!

Do you have a picture? If you are looking to show seriously, then its likely to hold you back if its obvious

I know of a dartmoor that has been very successful in ridden classes who has a rather large white sock...which strangely disappears in the ring!

Black is white leg
You can get spray black make up for horses. I think supreme prodcuts do it. I think the star is fine left personally.

I've been advised that leather dye is my best friend for my fell's back legs. However remember that make-up is banned for M&M's (not so for show ponies) so if you're caught (like if it rains!) you'll be breaking the rules.
