Just trying to work out how big my welsh d is going to make he is going to be 15hh by the time he gets to 3 so was wondering how much he will grow from 3 years +
Quite true Puppy.Parentage, nutrition and general development will dictate their height but the rate can be sheer guess work sometimes!
They ceratinly can take as long as seven years to fully mature and during that time you can expect to go through a number of saddles! Never buy "the life time saddle for a four year old Sec D!!!!
Colts tend to have growth spurts once they are castrated (as testosterone can inhibit growth in height).
Part bred Welsh, as in the TB X Sec D can be notoriously slow maturing, with the males being the worst and usually most uneven in growth.
OP - bear in mind there is no such thing as a definite height at maturity though! Its only an estimation that a breeder can give. I sold a three year old gelding (and he was cut early) at 14.2h. At maturity he is now 15.1h
My old boy was 14 when I got him but I know the people who bought him as a two year old. He was a big foal and was expected to make 15hh+ but just stopped growing at 2 1/2 and was barely 14hh. He was kept entire until 3 1/2 in the hope it would help him grow but he never did.
Made him a bolshy b****r though.
Maybe if they'd cut him sooner, any energy he'd wasted on being the George Clooney of the horseworld (not that he covered an mares, just spent all day showing off to them apparently) would have gone into growing instead and he'd not only have been bigger but less of an arrogant git as well. Loved him to pieces though, horse of a lifetime.
Never heared of anything like that before breezing his bum is 15hh at the minute and his withers are 14.2hh he needs to level out just wondering if he will grow much more i am happy though as we have made our 15hh mark and i was so worried i would have to sell him as he didn't seem to be growing at one time
