Not good news this morning!!! , Aparently a new subsidy is to be paid to power stations so they will burn some wood instead of coal , aparently there is no where remotely enough wood waste or harvestable trees, so its not looking good for the price of animal bedding....

Think that next winter they will hit the £10 a bale. I got fed up 2 years ago of the continual price increase of shavings and shortage over the xmas period every year. I changed to shredded cardboard. It costs a fraction of the price of shavings and is much better than shavings, especially for one of my horses who has copd

This subsidy isn't new although it is ridiculous that the government supports biomass plants. What it means is that manufacturers of boards (chipboard, MDF etc) have to compete for logs so when the market picks up prices will rise for all wood based products.

Shavings could be in short supply which will push prices up.

Yes They will do anything but invest in shale gas which has lowered energy prices and reduced plant food gas emissions in the US, sadly in the UK energy policy seems to be driven by vested interests and junk science.

You think that is safe??????????
Hydro electric is far better & safer.

Dad is struggling to get the free shavings that he has always received from the timber yard in return for repairing their milling machine when it breaks down (he used to be a machine tool service engineer). Appears that pine and other white wood costs too much to mill these days so they are buying a lot of hardwood window frames and doors from abroad or milling red wood species so the shavings are hard, dusty and I believe (if true) that they can contain toxins that seep into your horses feet and into their system (not sure this is true to be honest but what I have read).

I think its no longer seen as a waste product coupled with the slowdown in the building trade which uses a lot of softwood that is making it expensive, not helped by the bonkers ideas about saving the planet from a non existant threat, and doing things which causes real envronment damage like growing crops for fuel so vast areas of rain forest are cleared
to grow soya etc !
