How much would £2k get you/loan

I am very much keeping my fingers crossed that by the end of the summer I might be in a position to have another horse.
But my budget will be at most £2-£2.5k. Or loan.
But would you loan to some-one who although experienced and competent is currently at a yard with no facilities (think 1 big field with mixed herd of about 25 horses and that's about it) and would be wanting to stay there?
And with my budget what could I expect to find?
I'd want something aged 6-14, pref gelding but would consider a mare, to hack alone & in company and perhaps do local shows so capable of a prelim dressage & a 2'6 sj course that would live out. Must be totally sound (already got 1 over-grown pet!) but vices not a problem don't mind some quirks but nothing unfit (they change once they're fit and you end up with a different horse!)
Basically would I be looking for rocking horse poo, especially with my budget? Have been looking but it's either old horses (nothing against them but I can't see myself wanting another horse after this one as it's likely to be with me for life and I don't want to be retiring it/saying goodbye in a few years time) or green/project horses (again nothing against them, I enjoy a project but I made a mistake with my last horse and can't take the chance of it not working out again)
But I really won't want a world beater, just something I can enjoy.

Opinions welcome thankyou :)

(And yes I know this is very hypothetical, just trying to get a feel for whether it's worth making some fairly major lifestyle changes in order to fund the second one!)

We've never spent more than £1500 on ours:

Woody (we overpaid as wanted him out of there!) was £1500 and was a really nice hack/all rounder for mum to get back into riding. He was older and nav/arthritis but we knew that and wanted to give him a nice end to his days. He's still going, just!

Blackjack was £1000 and was 15 when we bought him. I did LOADS of showjumping on him. If I was better I could have done dressage, but he also did hunter trials, horse trials, hacking. Everything really. He also taught lots of my friends to ride as well.

Squizz was £500. The owner was going to sell him for £200 but that wasn't even meat money so settled for £500! Jenny competed in every sphere, and generally did very well. He was 15 or so as well I think, and is still going very strong. He's now mid-20s.

Mouse was £350 as a 6 month, but very rare breed.

I think you'd get quite a lot for 2K, but you'd need to shop around. Try local pony clubs/riding clubs as well, and put the word out that you are looking. We got all of ours (except Mouse) from local magazine (Blackmore Vale magazine).

Good luck!

You should be able to get something bought for that. The market isn't that good at the moment. If you wait until the back end of summer prices will go down. Keep an eye on the horses for sale web sites. Good luck.x

I think you could, but will need to shop around.
My instructor has never paid more than £1000 for any of the school horses and they are lovely. Would you consider a TB? As of course you can get lovely well behaved ones that would do what you want, but unfortunately most of them don't seem to fetch much when selling due to their breed.

More than happy to have a tb but even those seem to be pricey at the moment- and if not then they're green/fresh out of racing/have old injuries and still fetching around £1500.
My current horse was a bargain-ous £700 but he was a rescue case (loan gone wrong) and it took months of hard work to get him back to a normal horse at which point he then had his arthritis diagnosis hence why I'm wary of having something that isn't already doing what I'd be wanting to do incase there's any nasty surprises.

I think I will be heading for tack shops notice boards & magazine ad's etc and placing wanted ads as well as trawling the net if/when the time comes.

Yes I am looking for a horse at the moment, although I do not want something like a TB due to their build, I need something with a bit more bone unless I can find a nice chunky TB.
But at the moment the market is a bit difficult and prices are quite high.

It would get you my project pony :) Round near me it wouldn't get you masses (se england) in terms of private adverts (recently saw a solid coloured cob 18 years old ,hacked and sat in a field for its whole life sold for 2.5k :o ) but we have a good auction near us where £800 bought you a 16.1hh 5 year old id x backed and broken ,popping 2'3'' courses, a couple of placings at u/a dressage and would hack alone or in company . Obviously green but with potential so might be worth looking at some of the upcoming sales so you get a bit more for your money :)

I'm heading off to the sales :)

I know we couldn't beleive it - don't think the buyer could either :) Less people seem to be putting reserves on them now so they now go for much less than they used to .

I've been looking for a second horse for around 6 weeks. I've come across several that meet that criteria, but viewings have all been cancelled as someone else bought horse.

If you are prepared to drive several hours and see a horse IMMEDIATELY then this is possible.

Regarding loans, total rocking horse poo if you want the horse at your yard.

The only horses I've viewed capable of getting high fifties unaffiliated prelim have been over £4k.

Can you get away with a 14.2hh? My friend has a great one for sell at the mo that ticks all your boxes. Closer to the £2500 mark but a very sane/sensible 5 year old that will go a long way with the right rider. No quirks or "issues". Oh dear, think this sounds like advertising but what im trying to say is they are out there. Just have to be quick about it. Also may find in the winter that you can get more of a bargain.

Hopefully by next year I will be able to afford a pony and would be looking to get a 13.2-14.2 (well built) beastie, preferably a mare, sensible in traffic and hacking, no major issues but ok is a bit quirky or green, potential to get to at least local showing levels. On those criteria I have been looking around and have been pleasantly surprised, most of the ads that catch my eye are under 1500.

I think for 2000 you should be able to get something at least sound of mind and body even if a little quirky/green, it will probably take a bit of looking but good luck.

Oh gawd, it's all a bit depressing!

Morrigan_lady & bexwarren- give me a shout if they're still available at the end of August (here's to hoping!) but don't want to ask for more info now when I know I'm still a little way off being able to afford it.

What happens at sales? It's probably a naive question but where do you stand in terms of come back if it all goes pear shaped? I don't mind green so long as the basics are there and it has a workable temperment. But I'm one of those who would like to see a horse 2 or 3 times before buying if possible so 1 look at a sale puts me off a little.

Travelling I don't mind at all (I'm based in Middlesex but have family in the West Mids, Wales, Cambs and Yorkshire so can stay over if I need to which covers most basis, lol) and when I bought mine it was the same- I had to go and see him the next day as other people were booked in later that day/week so you gotta move fast!

Lol! Ok, will keep you informed. I personally wouldnt have thought he would be around for a long period of time because of his good nature but who knows with the way the current market is at the moment. Lets say if he is still around I'm sure you will be able to get him for alot less than £2500.

There was a horse advertised on here a few weeks ago arab x cob 12yr old skewbald gelding 16+hh in Lincolnshire can't find his ad so probably sold. You could definitely find something with that budget. Have you tried your local ad mag?

I'm not looking to buy right now but have been looking to try to get a feel of what's out there, it seems really hit & miss. So horses advertised right now will more than likely be no good to me, just trying to get a vague idea of what people think I might get for my money.
Will try the local mags if/when it comes to it tho so thanks for the reply :)

Too late to add to my other post but do you have a RI? If you do could you ask them to keep an eye out for you? Mine loves to find horses for her clients. She is currently breaking/backing a horse for me to possibly buy in July/August :D

I don't down here but do have lots of contacts back home that I will be putting to use but unfortuantely they're used to aiming at hte higher end of the market (nto necessarily much higher but a bit) rather than my budget end. That said, they're the kind of people who like a challenge, lol.
