If I wanted to by a good potential dressage horse with the following credentials... how much would it cost? Not that I am looking at the moment... just wanted to see how much I would need to save up if I wanted to get another horse (wishful thinking, but hey ho!)...

4-6 years old

Preferably a Warmblood

Good breeding

A bit of temperament is fine - but not nasty

Nice paces

Potential to reach at least Advanced Medium level

Also, for those who have bought one that fits the above... did you get them in the UK? From whom? Private, stud farm or dealer?

Define good breeding

If you're talking super fashionable hanoverian lines then £10 - £15k, average breeding £5k plus.

I have a nearly broken 4yr old that I think I'm going to have to sell....... v. reasonably priced to a good home

Good breeding to me means the horse was actually bred rather than paddock accident (where the filly/colt may look like a Warmblood and years later, it turns into a Shire

), and that the pedigree is at least traceable to at least 3 generations - I think that's actually quite common though!!! Nice well-known names in that pedigree would be good, too.

Basically, parents should have been chosen wisely by breeder, so that the horse has ideal conformation, temperament, etc.

I would have loved to see your horse scotsmare - but OH won't let me get another one... yet

!!! My own 4yo is on box rest at the moment, and it does really make me think about getting another one at some point, just in case this happens again... can't do without!!! The 4yo that I have fits all the criteria above, but you can never guarantee soundness

, PLUS didn't buy her in the UK, so I guess the price here will be a lot higher than what I paid for her.

I have to say my 4yr old is all of the above (not the shire horse bit obv

) and it is my now ex-OH who is trying to force me to sell her - he hasn't won yet though

If it's any consolation there are bargains to be had if you know where to look

Oh, I hope you can keep your 4yo - it seems like you have fallen for your horse so much (from what I can see in the backing updates).

Luckily, my OH will one day want a horse for himself, I think (he's getting a little jealous that I have one... we also have "his and hers dogs", too, you see), so might end up with a herd

!!!

I seriously hope you win against ex-OH. I hope he is not too much of a begrudging ex-OH who just wants to be mean!!!

If you shop around bargains can be had. We have a horse with amazing breeding who we found as a 5 year old in poor condition for very little money. Although it has taken time he is doing well now.

A very good friend of mine has recently bought a warmblood/ISH and he is to die for. . .

He is stunning with amazing paces. . . she paid £8k for him last october i think. He came straight from stud and was very well bred.

Around 6-8k for the 4 year old version, a lot more fo the 6 year old version if it had a good competition record at the right level for it's age!

MeowKiss - you've just confirmed to me what many newspapers failed to convince me of (because London is so damn expensive)... that Russia is now one of the most expensive places to live in!!! Ooooh, I LOVE your grey... what's his or her bloodlines, may I ask???

I know of a fantastic one for sale but he is up for £30,000! But then he is being trained by a top dressage rider, has the best breeding and is a lovely person!

I bought a lovely locally bred mare, nice breeding (samber), superb paces as a 3 year old and paid just under £5k. I think I got lucky though and happened to hear of the horse just as it was about to go on the market and got in there quick. 6months on and we're about to start BD and I have very high hopes for her.

I paid £6250 for a rising 4yr old WB unbacked with good breeding and potential to go to the top 2 yrs ago. He's certainly got a lot of talent and does some fab work but isn't an easy horse - hence why i sold him to a professional last year!!!
