My friend is going to look at a horse tomorrow, just wondered if the price was right....

16.1 M/W Irish gelding. Rising 5. Recently brought over from Ireland, hunted in Ireland and once over here, snaffle mouth, good to do. Looks a nice quality sort in the pic but hasn't got any breeding papers as far as I know. Not done much other than hunt. It's from a reputable dealer...

So, thoughts on approximate price??

I paid £2800 a few months ago for my 16.2 papered Han x TB 5 yr old, who had (allegedly) hunted a couple of times and ODE'd but was not very brave and was never going to make an event horse. His tack was included in that price, including quite a nice jumping saddle.

Edited (I pressed send too soon) to say I think that was a fair price and the one your friend is looking at sounds similarly described?

We bought a similar horse from the same dealer for 3.5k 6 years ago, so they have gone up a bit since then!! Said horse is a super star, hence why we recommended them to our friend - but I'm thinking it might be a bit expensive...

Depends really. If its just an average bog standard hunter then I would say around 3k. If its a really nice brave horse who looks like it has potential to do other things to a decent standard then I'd guess around 4-5k.

He's 6.5k!

BUT, I think he's worth a look, just because the horse we got from them is so fab!

Money isn't really as issue, she just wants a nice mannerly hunter that looks pretty and doesn't pull/buck/rear/bounce - and she's a bit (a lot) piccy!!

I have to say my initial thought was 6K. But that was based on it having a good conformation, character and potential to do more.

Well if he really is the perfect hunter and she can afford to pay big bucks for something that ticks all the boxes then why not - a horse is only worth what someone will pay after all.

Well i doubt he will be the perfect hunter when he's not even five yet - but she's had a couple of older horses that have been really nice but not suitable for her and she's got another friend who will hunt/bring it on for her... I just think that sometimes you think your going to get a more sensible horse if you go for an older one but end up with a load of irreversible bad habits!

Will see how she gets on anyway - thanks for your replies everyone!
