How much would you expect to pay for a horse such as this :

16hh+ Gelding
5 year old
Nice tempermant
Happy to hack alone and in traffic
Basic flatwork and jumping
Seen XC jumps and is happy with them.
Enjoys jumping
Breeding not important

As i am struggling to find this horse at the moment within my budget. :(

I think it would vary wildly in the current market, you could pick up something for very little it could cost more if you are looking for a very uncomplicated 5yo with potential to go far.

Are you looking for a horse that has the potential to compete at a particular level, or just a nice allrounder/RC type?

What about conformation/looks?

Would you consider an ex racer?

Would you accept some vices (wind sucking for example) or a horse that is still green?

Must it be precisely 5, or would you consider a wider age band? On horse mart there are a few 5yo geldings from <2k upwards, have you checked the H&H classifieds?

I have one for sale like that at the moment, only difference is he is 8, and i am struggling to sell him! No idea why. He has hunted, showjumped upto 115cm, won around £200 BSJA won over 100 euros. Won CT, Dressage. Hacks, doesn't nap, buck or rear. Is a genuinely nice person and is waiting to go and have some fun!

I wouldn't expect to pay more than £2500 unless there was some amazing reason that made it stand out from the crowd. Saying that I would have thought you could grab a bargain around the £1500 mark going into the winter. There are certainly a few around with cheap pricetags where people need to get rid quick!!

Agree with _CJ_ to have a think about ex racers too :D

Around £5000, where are you looking ?

hmmmm... yea, that seems to be the norm. In which case i am 1k short. :( I have been looking on all the normal websites. Horsemart / Horsedeals / Horse quest / HOH

Alrounder / RC type more than anything but would like to have a go at BE 90/100. So would need some small potential.

What about conformation/looks?

Not to worried as long as it is the right horse for me.

This is something i have been thinking about. I didn't really want to buy straight from the track/sales as i do not feel i am experienced enough. But i have got the numbers of some of the retraining centres and was thinking about given them a call.

[QUOTEWould you accept some vices (wind sucking for example) or a horse that is still green? ][/QUOTE]

I wouldn't turn a otherwise fantastic horse down for certain vices. I do not want a 'to green' horse as already said i do not feel i am experienced enough. But the lack of flat work wouldn't bother me to much as I have the help from instructors etc. Just something that is happy to jump :)

See the above is what i thought when thinking through my budget, but i can't seem to find anything around this price tag. There are a few sort of Yorkshire way, but it is a bit of a trek for me from Essex. They all seem to be around the £5000 mark as Be Postive has already suggested

I would like to know where all these horses are for £1500 that fit the ops description, I have looked through several sites, there are a few under £3000 but mainly mares, unbroken, or with vices or other issues. Most of the cheap ones are very young or old.

I assume the op is looking for a horse to produce with eventing in mind.

There is a real shortage of correctly produced horses on the market, I think people will keep until next spring if they are not desperate.

Not precisely 5. Would look slightly older for the right horse.

Maybe i am being to fussy as have been surfing the ads. for a month now and not even found one that I would like to go and see. Phoned a few but still don't really get that excited about the sound of them. I think I just have to start viewing as the horse could be far better for me than what the seller is putting across

Thanks KP31. He sounds great fun and great to get out straight away on and having some fun :D But i am looking for something slightly younger to beable to continue its education from the basics it has already learnt

I had a look at the H&H classifieds and there is a 16.2 5yo Irish mare in Essex advertised for 1950, may be worth a look?

Yes, have seen lots of mares advertised well in my budget for what i want. But i already have 1 other gelding so would prefer to have another so they can be kept together as most livery yards do not allow mares and geldings in the same field :( But will go and have a look.....

For something that is 'ready to go' straight away to a clear round/prelim dressage etc. I would expect to pay £2500 ish. For something to put a bit more work into I could get something nice for less than £1k. Prices are a bit cheaper here though :)

That's exactly the sort of horse I was looking for before I got J.
I was thinking between 3-4k.
In the end I got J on lwvtb and he was 2.5k, an ex-racer who had some basic retraining, could hack and work in the school in an outline w,t,c.
2.5k probably seems a lot for a young ex-racer but since then he has given me tons of confidence jumping (he'll jump anything). We've been placed BD, clear round BE80's, been on RC jumping and dr teams, clinics, unaff activities etc and he's still only 6. He's beautiful and I'll never reach the limit of his
abilities and he's sound and sane.

Therefore they are out there. I was thinking of an ISH for 3-4k but although J isn't what I had in my head at the time he turned out perfect :).

I think those who reckon you can get a reasonably straightforward 16hh+ 5 year old to take a competent but not expert rider to BE100 for less than £2500 are probably a bit wide of the mark! My 5 year old is insured for £4000 (altho tbh I think I could advertise for more if I were selling) he's done a few prelim tests always been placed, usually top 3, jumped a few BN and been round a BE80 this year, but his potential probably exceeds BE100, our aim is SJ but I'd like him to do foxhunter, and certainly elementary dressage if not medium. Not sure about XC ATM, bit scared of breaking him, but he has done it and doesn't find it hard. Realistically I think he would sell between 6-7000, so if you are looking for one that might go to 1m etc jumping I don't see why you wouldn't find for £4-5000? Also if it's got less fashionable breeding that would bring price down?
Ex racers - you should get a LOT more for your money if looking at reschooled ones so may well be a great option?

 No, I personally know of quite a few, one which used to be at my yard. People are not making these figures up!

W e bought an ex race horse, had hunted and done working hunter 12 yr old pussycat for 1500, hacked out alone, was the bees knees in my opinion, really sorry to see him go, if I was a better rider he would have had a home for life.
Anyway we replaced him with our ideal horse, an ex racer 18 yrs old who doesn't mind a quiet life, doesn't object to spending time in the field yet happy to have a hack accross the moors.
My personal boy is 8 yrs old ride and drive x trotter, if I ever need to give up horses i will have this boy pts, he cost 1700 2 yrs ago and the thought of him being passed from pillar to post kills me as he is not the easiest of horses to love, having his own mind and a bully in the field to boot, he is jealous of my Oh and anything I make a fuss of like donkeys and Dexter cattle, but I wouldn't swap him for a lottery win.
The point I'm making is there is bargains out there and don't disregard ex race horses, in my experience they thrive on attention

To be fair, I'd love to live near you as every horse is a bargain! I'm still gobsmacked at the nice coloured cob for £250, especially as that's less than meat money!

I think that if you want a nice, straightforward chap then £5k seems reasonable but I'd look at £3k as a general minimum. An ex-racer could be a very good idea, Reg is fab- everything you've listed, plus a bit more! He'd have been well under your budget last year, but maybe over this?
