How much would you expect to spend?

On my current horse search, my budget has been commented a few times. I'm after something which is TB/TBX/ID/Warmblood or similar. However i'm being realistic in thinking i will probably end up with a TB or TB X because of my budget. In the future i want to do a bit of everything, to include jumping/schooling/hacking and the odd day XC schooling/hunting/dressage etc.
Now the thing is, i don't mind having a horse which is out of work and needs fittening or something green which needs schooling on. In fact i would be alright with an ex racehorse and have experience with them.
Preferably i'm after something between 4-14 and between 15.2hh-16.3hh.

I have about £1800 to spend, maybe £2k in April time depending on the horse. Am i being hugely unrealistic?
 
To be honest no!! i would say for a tb which are going for pitence money at the moment that i would say that is realistic!, keep looking maybe widen your search a bit more to different areas?, i think you said you when to look at one today was he/she not very nice?

no somebody at my yard has just picked up a tb ... its 15, has done everything, and she paid 1k. so far the mares been a total poppet!
 
Yes, second darley rehoming. I was there for a few weeks helping out and they have some very lovely horses. You cant go far wrong there- lovely sane horses, all re-schooled for you, full history known, any problems/issues you are told about, all for £100...

Are you able to look at more than one horse at once? Do they provide transport for the horse at all?
 
No, they try not to run it as a dealer yard as such- they would rather match you to the horse before you come out.
Not sure about transport, I expect that would cost more than the horse if you are far away!

agree with O_B you tell them what you after they let you now when they got something who matches your requirements, you go try horse. if you both agree its one for you - you take away you can return in first 3 months and then if you keep them you pay £100 plus vat. sign to say you will never race them again.
they obviously want to match you with something you will be happy with - they only have their own horses - think its all aga khans horses they race them then when finished they then turn them away for a few months then reschool them for rehoming.

My horse George is from Darley (on the stories page he's Sentinelese) I was lucky enough to be able to try 3 horses from there but mine was not a usual case. (long story) They will try to match you to a horse they have in by looking at your wish list and your background. They don't provide transport. I had to hire a lorry as they didn't recommend using a trailer. ( 2 minutes down the road I found out why!! enough to say it was a very long 40 minutes home lol) If you register on the website it may take a while to hear from them. You can always telephone to check that they have you on the list, but there is no top or bottom as such. So there is no way to know how long you might have to wait. Hope that helps.
 
you could arrange for national transporter - my friend recently paid £180 for gatwick to wolverhampton from a pro company to transport her new horse.
 
its not the aga khans horses as he is someone totally different, darley is sheikh mohammed's, his racing stables is godolphin. I would imagine they might also rehome his brothers racehorses so judmonte and shadwell too
 
Should also say that although the horses that they rehome are all back in work they may have retired due to injury and may have had a long lay off. (George and the other 3 I tried had all blown tendons) This may limit their future use so if you're looking for a future eventing star or show jumping prospect you might have to wait a little longer. It's still a great scheme though and I can't speak highly enough of them.
 
Your budget would buy you three at the auctions. If you can manage an ex racer just go to Doncaster - half an hour for you! - and buy one - or three - there. Beautiful horses just not fast enough going through for 500 gns
 
another one for Darley! I have got my boy from there and he is lovely. I was on their waiting list for around 4 months and was able to go and see him twice to take him out and get to know him.

*Nickles* how come you wernt able to take your horse home in a trailer? Was it just due to the nature of the horse? I picked mine up in my trailer but they just recommended i kept the top doors closed
 
You could look at the TB rehoming charities too, there are about three around the country that you could look at. I looked into them a few years back, similar sort of thing that you pay a rehoming fee and they try to match you up. I wouldn't hesitate to try them except that OH has said no TBs for our horse.
 
"Gingerthing" George is quite a big lad and Victoria thought he might not travel well in a trailer. As it was he was an absolute nightmare in the lorry. I think he would have turned a trailer over! When we arrive at the yard he was dripping in sweat his nostrils were flaring and the inside of the previously imaculate lorry was splattered in poo! The woman who owns my yard was heard to say to someone "What on earth has she done!" Needless to say he's settled really well since then but I still havent quite had the courage to try travelling him again yet.
