Hi all,
please can you help me with a dilema?

I have a horse that I am going to put out on loan with view to buy, the problem is I dont know how much to ask for him,

I want to be realistic but ive got my sentimental head on and just dont know what he is worth to a prospective buyer.

Anyway

He is 13 years old (Ive had him since he was 18mth old) 15.2 Bay Hannovarian x Dutch Warmblood gelding. (see pics in siggy)

Jumps about 3ft, ive never pushed him to do more I wld only do 2'6 at shows
always very willing to give anything a go.lovely paces

Rides out alone or in company. Would hunt but I never did get round to taking him.

No vices, he is very loving.

Now for the bad pionts:-

He has to be sedated for clipping/shoeing but when he was shod his feet split so farrier recomended barefoot and we never looked back,
Has been barefoot for about 6 years and has never once had a problem with jumping or roadwork his feet are fab.

He is a very sensitive horse and if he gets upset he is a shivering wreck, if you take things slowly with him he is fine.

eg I told the farrier to wait untill I got there before doing his feet, by the time I had got there my poor horse had been beaten and I had to get the vet out to sedate him hence the reason now for having to be sedated if he needed shoes.

He can be a pain to load on a trailer but if you have time and patience he will go in.

So how much do you think I should ask for? obviously want as much as I can (dont worry I wont be offended I am open minded lol)

Id say about £2K, you might be able to get more if the person loaning him takes a particular shine, Id maybe ask £2.5-3K with the expectation of ending up around £2-2.5K......

As others have said in the credit crunch its difficult to get decent money for a horse full stop!

sounds a lovely boy though, just needs a bit of TLC from everyone

I think his appeal is limited as a jumper/hunter because of his loading problem, although he might suit someone who stabled at a big equestrian centre or such like where there were plenty of activities to participate in without having to load. If he is exceptionally safe and bombproof to hack then you can ask more for him, because horses like that are in good demand.

If not then considering his age and his problems, about 1-2k, with the market being like it is at the moment. However, if someone falls head over heels in love with him then you may be able to get a higher price!

is he only a pain to load on a trailer..? or in lorry too? that'd make a big difference to me. if he's hard to load into anything, i'd say 1500, if he loads well into lorry i'd say 2000.

although if he truly is a shivering wreck, maybe less?

sounds like he needs someone to fall in love with him. if he's safe perhaps he needs a competent teenage girl to come and get gooey eyed over him. i think loaning with view to buy might help you find that person. good thinking!

thanks for the price guides.

when i say shivering wreck maybe i over exaggerated a bit. he just thinks you dont love him any more and just shivers as if you are going to beat him it only lasts till you pat him and tell him everything is ok. he is your best friend again then.

He loads fine on a lorry. and when I was taking him to shows regular he would walk straight on trailer, but if you dont do it for a while it can take 20mins to get him on.

Traffic he is fine except for motorbikes but saying that a load passed us one day and he didnt bat an eyelid.

I think sometimes im just too honest and make things out to be a big deal when they are not, thats why I want someone to loan him first so I also know they are competent and happy with him.

I know it can get a bad rap on here but why not advertise him on project horses as loan with view to buy? As you have had him so long and obviously want him to go to a good home this would give you a good chance to advertise him 'warts and all' so that he finds the right owner. Good luck

£1200 I think is a fair price at the moment (current climate/winter)

Basically in the right hands, he sounds like he will be a fab little RC horse, however you have to realise for that little bit more (for that extra grand) someone could get something without the little quirks that your fella has.

Basically I'm sure once he's been on loan to the right person, then it would be a fair price to expect and an easy sale without having the fuss of people messing you around or him going to the wrong home.

I paid £1000 for my horse (with all tack and rugs) over 2 years ago - pre credit crunch. He sounds very similar to yours ... awful with farrier at first but has got lots better, wouldn't even try to clip him, is a big wuss often and won't load - on anything!!

I was looking for a happy hacker so he suited me perfectly and I love him to bits - but wouldn;t have paid any more for him. He had originally been advertised for £2k + but his old owners had to drop the price after so many viewings.
