How much would you pay and is it needed - full livery??

I have been thinking about moving back to West Sussex for a few weeks now, and last night got a phonecall offering me the use of a lovely yard, that I can basically run as I please. I have always wanted to run a full livery/training yard, and have the stud incorporated as well. What I want to know is, is it a viable option - are there enough people wanting the service I want to offer.

The details are this;

Lovely yard, American barn stables, all on shavings unless specific requirement. All year turnout. Horsewalker, menage, and a short distance from gallops and cross country course (five minute hack). Small clubhouse/coffee room.

I would offer a full livery service, to include bedding, feed, worming, all care of the horse and also general exercise. Things such as schooling, clipping etc to be extra, but not a huge amount. Shoeing and vets fees are down to the owner, although we will arrange visits etc.

At the yard I would also hold regular clinics from top international riders.

This yard is based in West Sussex. How much do you think I would be able to charge, and do you think that there is a market for this? I know that there are a lot of full livery yards etc down that way already, and just wondering if one more would be overkill.

i am in west sussex, i did have my own yard last year and could not get full livery at all in the area i was in. i think it depends what part of west sussex (PM if you prefer) when i rang around to check prices it varied from £90.00 to £120.00 P.W (2007 prices) but it does depend what facilities you have to offer. i found most wanted DIY and paid for T/O am only.
 
Agree I'd stay in Suffolk too !!! Its all soooo expensive down here and I personally think we have full livery yard overload and the market isn't particularly there.

I know friends of mine had to give up their rented full livery yard because of it.

Plus with the economic climate lots of people are switching to DIY with services to save money.

Really depends which area though.
 
I love Suffolk, and it is definately much cheaper... But the rent for my own house takes up most of my spare cash - if I lived in Sussex I could go back to my parents, and have lots of spare money for the nags...

If anyone in Suffolk wants to rent out a room let me know! Or, if anyone knows of any small yards, or even just fields to rent, also get in touch!
 
Some things such as whether you will have a good choice of feeds, whether you can provide individual turnout, hay or haylage (quality of it), locked tack room, volume of demand at various times for the school may affect price/interest of custom

I'd say, in that area, £95-£120 so pretty similar to other quote on here. Probably more in the middle of this range if you are grooming and doing basic exercise.
 
If you intend offering full livery then you need to charge at least £200-£250 per week if you are going to make any money out of it at all.

Anything less than this and you are charging your time out at nothing and loosing a lot of money.

Looking after horses properly is highly labour intensive and should be treated as a business.

Are there actually livery yards in this country that charge that much and how do they justify this extraordinary amount??!

I worked on a yard once that charged £250 a week (£1000 per month) but this was owned by a top international trainer, and the horses were ridden by him (he has competed at the olympics).

I think the average seems to be between £80 and £120 depending on where in the country you are. I was thinking of around the £100 mark, so these estimations fit in with what I thought.

I can kind of understand £200 + for the scenario above, but it must be very rare, surely. I for one would be getting my fork out for DIY at that price!

£100/week would be spot on I reckon, or poss a little more given the exercise part.....Actually W.Sussex is likely to be a fairly expensive area, so bearing that in mind, on reflection, £120 wouldn't be out of the question. I'd perhaps advertise it (on relection) at £120 (or when you have phonecalls) and see how you go. Sorry to confuse things.
 
I think our YO who also runs a full livery yard separate to our DIY one, charges around the £100-£120 mark - not sure on exact charge - this is just "basic" full livery, any extras like exercising are charged on top I believe.

She's pretty much always full up I think, but does have a good reputation in the area.
 
Not sure about Sussex, but around here good part livery (no exercise ) will cost £100-£110 per week, with Full livery costing around £150 upwards.
