How much would you pay for a potential eventer?

Insurance money should be here by next week so we are looking for a new horsey finally WOOOO :D Where looking something that will atleast do Novice, in the future that is!! But on a pretty low budget of £2500, a grand less than what i hoped but no point in moaning. So the original plan was something from 5-7 that had done a bit but have had to re-think that one and have come up with either an unbroken 3yr or a just broken 4yr. Is this a realistic budget for what i want or am i way off??!

I would say that going into winter, in this economic climate you should be able to get a nicely started 4/5 year old.
Good luck with your search!

I thought the same when I started looking but found that all the nice ones were double the price unless you are looking at an ex-racer.

Yes thats exaxtly my thoughts lol Just looking through websites now and the nice looking ones dont have a price displayed so i tend to avoid them!! And then the nice ones are atleast 500 too dear :( My last horse was an ex racer and turned into the horse i always wanted so an ex racer is one of the last options. Iv been offered an unbroken 3yr tb and have just seen the most gorgeous 3yr on the internet but its 2500 and not broken grrrrr

Eventers always sell for a lot of money. Your best bet would be to pick up a cheap ex-racer (£500 - £1000) and send it off for training.
:/ Our skinny ginger thing is worth about £30,000 as a pure show jumper, £40,000 as an Eventer he was bought 2 years ago for about £4000. Unschooled, stinking manners, but because it was from Andrew Nicholson, the YO simply had to have him :D the joys of making tea and gossiping at an Event yard.

But I think the "making your own one" route would be good for your budget.

I think with your budget your options could be these:

Buy a well bred 'potential' eventer possibly 3 rising 4 but unbroken!!

Buy an ex race horse with good comformation and a good brain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Buy an allrounder riding club type that maybe has the potential to go on with the right work!

The decent horses (young) that are ready (or have done a season) are probably 3 times the budget!!!

I know i hear you all shouting 'the economic climate'ect ect ect ect, but just have a look on horse quest or horse deals and thats what they are up for!!!!!!

I bought a 3yr old with serious potential as an eventer this summer. He'd been broken and had manners to burn, and was just £2,500!

I was lucky, but he's going to be a serious horse when he grows up... and didn't break the bank...

Totally disagree with those who reckon you can't get a decent potential eventer for 2500.... I bought this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8k5YOtX1WY&sns=em

in 2009 as unbacked 3 year old for almost exactly that price. He's now backed, won his first dressage test, jumping 2'6-2'9 courses easily and tbh if I'd pushed him would have done 4 year old classes easily. According to various well respected instructors he should easily go Novice eventing, foxhunter SJ or decent level
of affil dressage. He's also very nicely bred (out of a clover hill mare by a KWPN stallion with sandro/nimmerdor lines).

You just have to look hard and be a bit lucky and also see a bit of a diamond in the rough!

I paid £3k for a lovely broken 4yr old ish two years ago, when the market was much better, who has turned out superbly. He was a total gawky thing at that age, but well bred, with a good frame, and nice paces and jump. Even though he was totally green and couldn't canter in the school, you could see what could be achieved...

I think even though the current market isn't the best people are still asking quite a lot for horses, I do think you will be able to find something nice which has just been started but I think it will take a bit of searching. Buying a cheaper ex racer and then using the rest of your budget for training etc. seems a good option?

I agree with most... Competition horses with good potential and that are well bred haven't dropped that much in price... However, we have a lovely little 15h mare by a Concorde stallion that we backed ( walk , trot, canters round the ménage, jumps set of 70cm ish fences and hacks up the road ) early summer, she was turned out in the field when our son was born and we haven't managed to get her back in yet due to time, we only want £2k for her from the field... Her sisters have sold for £10k plus, buy she is a diddy one and is out of work ATM... We haven't had any interest in her ( she's not actually advertised, just on website ) but are getting calls and viewings all the time for the £8k plus horses... The Market is strange at the moment...

Actually here young eventers do sell for a decent price; because generally they all have pretty good potential, and have fab breeding.
Thats what ive found anyways! I was in your position last month, but I was more lucky than you as we had the money from when we sold merlin.

I saw this 4 year old - very, very nice, but a bit small for me - nicely started and IMO lots of potential. Uncomplicated to ride as well

And this is nice, at the same yard. Very nice, photos not great, much nicer in person. Plus, good eventing breeding.

There are some real bargains going into winter at the moment. You should get a nice horse for that. Right time of year to buy as they dont want to have to feed them and work them through the winter.

So it is possible if i look very hard then!! Wouldnt mind another ex racer if i cant find something else, its just the accident prone-ness that puts them to the bottom of the pile so to speak!!

Ecrozier he is gorgeous i really like him :)
