How much would you pay for a vetting!

Hi. I have used Western Counties twice for a 5 stage vetting, last one was nearly two years ago and from memory cost around £200. I found them very good.

Thanks. Which level of vetting would you recommend for a £2000 pony. My sister in law has been advised to have 5 stage which I think seems excessive. The ponyshe is hoping to puchase for my niece appears to be in good health no obvious lumps or bumps and would be used for 2'6 showjumping / cross country. She is 14.

Would always recommend 5 stage, even if the horse was free! I had a 5 stage vetting on a £2000 horse, and only after exercise they found a major heart murmur. This may not have been picked up on a 2 stage, so would always have one.

why is a £2000 pony not worth a 5 stage vetting? could still have anything wrong with it which might cost you a fortune in vets bills and mean the horse is out of work. every horse is worth a 5 stage unless you dont care about what might be wrong with them?

i have had 2 vettings this year. One cost £196 and was stopped during stage 3. The other was £195 for a full 5 stage but I did take the horse to the vets. That's in Surrey.

unless you've had the pony on loan for months and months I would always have a 5 stage vetting for exercise and bloods. Although blood isn't tested there and then it's stored for 3 months incase of a problem. Although vettings are only valid for the day they see the pony the bloods give you a fall back if it has for any reason been drugged.

Amendment the blood is stored for 6 months at the horse forensic labs in newmarket, then thrown away if not tested.

I wouldn't ever really advocate running bloods in spite of age unless your vet advises it - it is very unusual that the horse is drugged ( can happen but not often) and it costs just shy of £300!

Wait and if a problem develops ever then think about testing then. The vendor pays if wanting to prove not drugged, purchaser pays if wants to prove is drugged.
