a 15h 4yr old (bum high so maybe make 15.1) believed to be cob x native type

ride and drive, snaffle mouth, clean limbed, no blemishes but needs weight/condition, very quiet nice nature, not been properly schooled but knows the aids, and is fab with traffic
been driven more than ridden so green but seems safe, no vacs

they are asking 1500 but i think it is over priced? then looking on horsemart i see some horses to me, that have quirks of same breed/type and they are 2500? not sure whether to up my offer on him or not as he would make a good horse but needs quite a bit of schooling and weigt put on + to mature

1500 for a safe horse?
Any safe horse is worth that and more.
You can teach good schooling, you can feed up, very minor points.
If the horse is as described above, then he'd be a decent buy for 1500 :D

hmm dont know what to do!
this is the horse in question (very bad pic sorry!) posted it before to see if i was too big for him, but he is only 4 so expect him to fill out a lot so he would take my leg better

he is very nice but not sure how long he has been broken in but has driven a scrap cart hence why he is bombproof!

If he's 15hh I'm the Queen of Sheba! Yes he needs to fill out but filling out won't turn a 14hh into a 15.1hh. Also, be aware that a 4 yr old can't be classed as bombproof even though he may have pulled a scrap cart. I'd love to have seen him being backed and introduced to the cart for the first time! You might very well find that as he grows, eats properly and has a different workload and different management, you would have a totally different lad on your hands, maybe bouncy, wanting his own way, nappy, who knows. On the other hand, he may be as described in which case he'd be worth the price but be suspicious, be wary, ask difficult questions, is he truly 4yrs old, when was he backed, does he hack out on own/in company, etc etc etc etc etc etc. Why are they selling him if he's so wonderful?

My view is that 1500 isn't a lot to pay for a good sort. You are obviously quite taken with him.
Ask yourself this, is the right horse for you worth 1500? And is he the right one for you? You describe him as bombproof, well you can't say that about many 4 year olds.

Go with your gut feeling :)

by bombproof i meant he behaves in traffic and has seen lots of fast/big lorries etc and is quiet to handle and non reactive to loud bangs, general hussle & bussle, people running round etc

i do have a good feeling about him as he has a fab nature which always helps with schooling i find they dont fight and are willing to please so more trainable...his age was a debate as i agree he could well fill out and as he grows in strength become totally different, but thats why i like ride and drives as it has taught them to be repsectful of the bit and to listen etc from an earlier age so sets them up for sucess

I actually quite like the look of him and I'm very decisive when buying a horse, i just know if right almost instantly and go with my gut. Got a diamond recently by following my gut :D

Box_of_Frogs raises some good questions though, some you may want to take up with the seller.

Would you vet the horse?
Driving does tend to make them fairly unreactive to the world which is a bonus.

Mmmm only you know, do the sellers seem the honest type?
Why are they selling?

yes would get him vetted, the sellers are people a few people on my yard have got their horses from before, all young and not looked much when first arrived but with schooled turned out to be good allrounders and have all been quiet, the seller runs a local trekking centre and buys a few in every now and again to use in trekking centre as often people want to buy them as they are so good to hack, it has good reputation
this one was actualy not advertised but was the only gelding he had in when i rang to see what he had, and i was after a gelding, he was planning for his son to have it but he is the type that if cash is waved under his nose he will sell so went to have a look

agree more info is needed though, the guy was out at the time we popped in (didnt make appointment just said pop in whenever) so his wife showed us him and left us to play round and have a ride on him(still around but wasnt like a proper "viewing", so they must trust the horse? ) one of the girls hopped on him just to show he was safe before got on, she must of only been 12

lots to consider

Compared to the Danish market - my native battleground - it is ridiculously overpriced.
That said, I know there is a country to country difference and over here 'safe horses' seem to attract some inflation...

Price is fair enough if you like it enough. Agree you can't call a 4 yr old bombproof and of course it ain't

I've met loads of 4yr olds that were almost bombproof - they're just at the toddler stage where they toddle along quietly. Quite a few of them have changed into real teenagers when they hit 5 or 6 though!

I don't think its that bad a price.

I do, however, think you look a bit big on him - not heavy, but legs too long. I didn't want to say on the other thread as thought you already owned him.. He would easily carry you, but if there is even the slightest change of you growing I would get something bigger... 15.2-16h would be much better for you if he is 15h.

He looks like a good sort who will fill out a lot (the reason you look biggish is because his ribcage is quite narrow at present with legs hanging down; once he fills out your leg should be "taken up" more. I have very long legs, and am 5'9" tall, but don't look big on my barrel of a 14.2.

I, too, like R&D horses. They usually have the right temperament to be bombproof all their lives. It seems as though you feel that this dealer is trustworthy. I think you have to consider what your budget is and how much tack etc would cost, before deciding what to offer. The seller obviously knows what he is prepared to accept, which I guess will be less than the £1500 already mentioned. You will have to meet in the middle.

thanks for everyones input so far, it was exactly what we were debating, he is small but he is part native so we expected him to chunk out a fair bit so would take up my leg and would look more proportional as he is very slim as he is now, so we went to look with this in mind as i agree i thought i looked too big on him

im at my final height now no more growing to do, and im not too heavy so this wouldnt be an issue

i am still as undecided as ever! haha
