How much would you pay to employ a groom?

If you were (or are) employing a full time groom to work in a general livery/competition yard what would you consider to be a fair wage per week for a 5.5 day week (including accomodation, after tax) ?

Employee would have BHS stages 1+2,be competent on a quiet horse but not sharp ones and be efficient in basic yard duties but needing supervision on others.

Would post this in careers but more people in here.

when i was grooming i was paid£70 with acc, sounds like more was expected of me, but it was on well known riders yard so i saw it as an experience.

I pay £6/hr with bonuses such as keep of horse, lessons, chance to compete etc.

Trainee wages,accomodation, livery and instruction to at least Stage III / PI level, subject to having enough other staff to ensure supervision was available and subject to a yard of some quiet horses on the lviery side- sounds like many competion horses could be a bit too sharp at the moment for this 'groom'

I was offered a job with a very well known show jumper, who offers accomadation and all house hold bills paid and a wage which worked out as around £2.50 an hour after tax, which i considered a farely good wage, considering most living expenses were being paid already.

For an adult groom (22 or over), National Minimum Wage is £5.52 (before tax.) The maximum you are allowed to offset for accommodation is £30.10

The value of most 'perks' cannot be offset against the requirement to pay NMW - that includes training unless there is a formal Apprenticeship contract which includes requirements as to the minimum amount of training that will be received etc.

Most working pupil arrangements are actually illegal.

I never realised just how badly grooms were paid!! I knew it wasn't brilliant but wow, what an eye opener, and newfound respect to all you hardworking grooms out there!

Lots!!!!!!!!!!!! a good groom is hard to find. They work damn hard for very little reward (usually). Worked as a level 3 groom, managed a yard and now on full livery, so seen it from all angles. Always look after your grooms.
