Hi, I need to find out roughly how much it would cost per month to keep a pony at grass or diy livery. My mum might buy me a pony next year and just need to know so we have a rough idea. Thanks:)

Depends on the area you live.

Where I am you can get grass livery from £15 p/w, and diy from £25 p/w. However we are on the welsh borders.

If nearer the south east you could be looking at double these amounts per week.....

Then you will need to factor in hay/bedding/feed/shoes/insurance etc so not just livery costs to consider.

South East is a wide area - although you are absolutely right to stay safe and not say where you are on an open forum.

You need to think about a lot more than just the livery costs I'm afraid. You are quite right to try to figure it all out in advance. Here is a rough breakdown of the various costs...

Livery. Probably anything from £120 upwards in the SE. Average in Surrey (where I am) is probably close £200 per month.
Depending on the type of livery you have and where you go to school you might need assisted or full livery so someone can turn your pony out for you before school etc. That is more. School livery is sometimes cheaper - but then your pony gets used in a riding school.
Feed and Hay. Depends on what feed they are on; but if you budget for about £35 - £40 per month that should cover most things (Unless the hay prices rocket!)
Bedding. If you have a stable you need to fill it with something. You can pay anything from about £40 per month upward depending on what you use and how careful you are mucking out.
Shoes / trimmer. Whether you shoe or not someone is going to have to see the pony's feet every 6 weeks or so at a cost of about £70 - £80 a time.
Dentist. Yep - horses have to go too! About £80 a year.
Vaccinations. Only annual - but about £200 with Vet call out fees!
Tack, Rugs and Kit. Some ponies come with a lot and some with none - but you are going to want to replace or add to it. Don't forget water buckets, feed buckets, hay net, grooming kit, wheel barrow and mucking out tools!

Depends how in love with the vet your horse is.

Mine turnout out to be pretty in love... I hadn't predicted a ~£900 vets bill in 9 months of ownership. I've had to pay about £400 of that and the insurance the rest.
