At the point of sending baby pony away for a week schooling and 'bringing on'. Everything is perfect, the arrangement, the facilities, the people are lovely and it isn't far either!
Due to our 'special arrangement' (I get a youngster of theirs to keep my mare company while pony away) they have offered me a deal.... £40 per day... I'm not sure if this is normal, or in the range or whatever but it does seem a lot for a NF x 12.3/13h 4 year old pony, who won't get turnout while away, (maybe a hand graze at my request) but equally won't get any hard feed and only a section of hay each night as she simply doesn't need much! So, I'm paying for her to be stabled, and kept clean, and to be ridden for 20 mins, perhaps twice a day if it warrants it.
I've got to consider that the ponies price tag is maybe £800, so is it REALLY worth spending a large proportion of her value, to perhaps keep her value in the best scenario. My ultimate plan is to sell her, when the right situation arises.
Anyway, I have contacted the person regarding this schooling livery, stating what I can afford, (basicly, what I thought is acceptable due to the fact that my liveries, who are on complete full competition livery, with all facilities (and an on site vet) are paying less!!

Your thoughts?

my boy was away a few weeks ago being backed and I paid £120 a week, that was everything included! He's put his prices up to £135 a week now, but I'd booked early, so had the original price :)

so to me that sounds a lot, esp if you're having one of theirs at the same time!

That seems very steep, I think that for a pony of that size half that would be more like it, I charge £20 per day for ponies that are cheap to keep as it is really just as you say 30 mins a day of time plus a bit of hay and bedding, for £40 I would expect a proper full livery, including daily turnout, daily grooming and it coming home ready to go to a comp but this would probably mean pushing it too quickly which may not be in the best interests of the pony and not what you really require.
You may be better off finding someone to come out to you a few times a week to ride her on, it may be more effective in the long run than such a short crash course that could possibly blow her brains if they do too much in order to justify the cost.

I would like the idea of someone 'small' yet experienced to come to me, but we don't have facilities.. She is backed and broken. hacks down the lanes in front or behind, goes through the stream, lunges and long reins. Today I introduced her to side reins for the first time, and she went very well. She has seen a few poles, inches high under saddle, but has a lovely jump on the lines.
I'm hoping they will re-consider their price, as I do have what I consider acceptable available for her to go to boarding school for a week. Then maybe again in 6-8 weeks time.

Thinking about it that's nearly £300 a week.....!!!!! And you get the privilege of looking after their horse???? Tell them to *** off....cheeky beggars!!!!

So it isn't just me then thinking of it being a bit much?!?! Makes me feel slightly better!

So, on a different tangent, does anyone know anyone in my area that does ponies???

Yard I'm at has horses and ponies in from all over the country, we have one in from Cornwall at the min, our rider is a v small dude and very calm and confident, we are Warwick area

So she's on full training livery then? Ridden for 7 days. So if you work out how much the full livery should be per week, add on the time for prepping and training per hour and then see whether that works for you. The pricing sounds a little on the expensive side to me tbh.

I've had quotes for small ponies anywhere between £80 and £180 a week
The £180 was for someone recommended on here and who has a national reputation so while I cannot afford that i do not think it unreasonable given the quality of the person's work

So I think your quote is very high

If you are already paying for facilities/field/livery could you find someone to come to you? quotes for my ponies have been £20-25 a hour plus fuel which may long term work out quite expensive as more can probably be acheived quicker by sending the pony away but it does allow you to fully supervise, saves costs of transport and allows you to spread costs over a longer period

Minor update.... think I've found somewhere more financially suitable!! Only slight problem is that they can't have until towards the end of June. That isn't a bad thing really - is it. I can carry on as is until then??

Extortionate! I am currently paying £110 a week for a 16.1 to be broken for me in Northampton. I'm getting regular updates, a video today and the stables when I saw them were beautifully kept.

CC was away for 6 weeks, I payed £340 in total including shoeing. So that is a rip off!

The OP has been quote a price that is well ott but how can any yard take in a schooling livery for £50 per week, there is no profit to be made at that rate if the job is to be done properly, at less than £10 per day it would not even cover a basic part livery in most areas without any riding or schooling being done.

CC has come back very well schooled, perfect on the road, hacks alone and in company. The girl that she went too is on the british young riders team, and currently away on the Spanish sunshine tour.

I agree that is way too cheap!
Soem cirners must have been cut.

or the person did it as a hobby and didnt chege for their time etc.

For a pony I paid £87.50/week for general schooling two years ago. It wasn't the smartest yard but all the horses there looked happy and healthy and seemed to have a good relationship with the rider/grooms.
