How often do you compete?

Thought I'd stick this in here as if I put the question in CR everyone would say very often and I'm more interested in what less competitive people say! Mainly after the thread a few days back about the costs of keeping horses and how much of that is competing.

So do you compete/ go out with your horse at all (I do include sponsored rides, clinics and hunting anything where you pay to take your horse out).?

And how often do you go out with your horse?

I hire a lorry off a friend and normally go out once/twice a month to a clinc, show or event. Occassionally I might go out 3x a month and sometimes I don't go out at all for a month.

I will get a trailer at some point but I doubt that will affect how much I go
out.

I probably spend £80 every time I go
Out on the lorry hire, fuel and entry. It still works out cheaper than buying and maintaining my own lorry! Again depending on what I do sometimes it's more (BE-£150+ ouch!!) and sometimes it's less.

If you don't compete that's great I'd also like know that if that's ok :).

Just wondering really!

Thanks

I'm out at least once a week in spring/summer/autumn normally... Either competing or clear round or training. I'm not out competing so much in winter as the horses are less fit / roughed off when the weather's bad / only hacked mostly (don't have a school) but I take Fergs out to hire an indoor for schooling once a fortnight. This year I've been going to horseball training every few weeks too...

Mind you, most of what I do is unaffiliated / relatively cheap - horseball's £5 for 2 hours, indoor is £15 to hire but very close by, unaffiliated sj/showing/dr isn't expensive (maybe £15-20 in entries) and I try to do local stuff rather than further afield for diesel costs (other than horseball which is all in Suffolk/Colchester atm - so I spend about £15+ in diesel). I'd never do that amount of affiliated, expensive stuff...

Affiliating with BE (not that we'd survive an event anyway) would be a heck of a lot more expensive

Between May and September I'm usually out twice a month on average. Entries are £40 per tournament and diesel costs vary hugely. I'm very fortunate to be in Milton Keynes so not a million miles away from anywhere. I travel to Rugby, Henley in Arden, Doncaster, Essex, Kent and the cotswoldsso fuel varies from £50 to £150+

Nothing since end of oct, transport is out of action at the moment but should hopefully be back on the road 2-3 times a month from spring through summer and also weekly rc stuff

Used to go out once a week show jumping then decided I preferred dressage. But since opening the livery seven years ago, I don't have the time any more. Also I have had a real run of bad luck with horses. Lost one to a broken leg, then one to colic, then had to retire my star girl due to a devastating shoulder injury in the field, and then my latest horse that I had hoped to get out on and do dressage was diagnosed with kissing spines and had to have a major op which he is now recovering from. Don't know if I'll ever be able to ride him again though. :'(

Were out at least once a week for lessons, maybe twice, and compete maybe once or twice a month also! Lessons on average £30- £40. Sjing £10per class + 1st aid, Dressage around £8 per class. No idea on fuel for lorry as I never fill it up mum does! :D

When my old gelding was in work we used to be lucky if we got out once a month, more once every 3 months! mid-summer maybe we managed a bit more as we were hacking distance from the riding club, but that was depending on there show dates. We have no transport.

I think you will find that if posted in competition riders because most have transport they do go out a lot. Where as if you don't have access to transport you don't get to go out as much or if at all!

I do not know of many people that have transport and only go out once every few months, if they have the transport they tend to use it :)

My first year with a trailer :D

I'm aiming to be out at least once a month competing - dressage or show jumping.
Hopefully get out to a couple of pleasure rides.
Amongst that, I'd like to go at least once every two months to training sessions - especially cross country.

I share discovery with my dad, so I'll have it from March - September.

In the spring and autumn we compete about once every other week but in the summer I go out every week to compete and maybe extra if I go for a lesson. But I do it so everyother week i do dressage with my tb mare and the other every other week i go with my appy and then occassionally go to a show with my exmoor in hand.
