I have let the 4 year old jump once properly and another 2 times in 4 months.... id like to start more often (once every other week?) but dont want to overkill and make her stale as she loves it righ tnow....

so how often do you jump in the paddock?

also separate question.... im looking at buying some jump poles... is 7 foot long enough to use for practise?

thanks :)

Hiya i let my daughter jump twice a week at home if no show and once a week at home of shes going to shows.

When i had a youngster i liked to do it regulary so theyve still got it fresh from the last session, id say 1-2 twice a week just keep it short and interesting and leave it on a good note.:)

hiya, thanks for the reply :)

So once a week for her isnt too much?

I want her to progress and not leave it too long between jumping lessons (for her!), she absolutly loves it but not over excitable which i want to keep her like that, hence why im asking :)

No i wouldnt say once a week is too much at espeacially when teaching a youngser, i find if you leave to bigger a gap they take longer to progress once there training is in place its not so bad. SHe wont get bored doing it once a week espeacailly when ther work is varied. Tbh when i had jumping horses they always had a show once a week and then i had lessons once a week so they always jumped twice a week, the only time i skipped the leasson was when i had competitions twice a week. I never had one go sour on me jumping that often.:)

Last time we jumped was the only time she jumped properly...the other 2 times were really just trotting raised poles tbh...

only trouble nowis im after a GP or ideally jump saddle as were jumping in the dressage saddle :D :D

With a youngster It hink once a week is fine, as long as you do different exercises i.e not just one jump in the school which you jump over and over again.

When my old pony was in full competition mode he was never jumped at home unless there was a problem at a show as he didn't need it as he knew his job by then. But Koko (also a youngster) was jumped once a week and he loved jumping and never went stale he just kept getting better and better :)

once a week come summertime when he's in pretty intensive work, once every other week this time of year though.

He does however jump his paddock fencing daily x-x Little monster.

I don't LET my horse jump at all, as she's supposed to be a LOU retiree, but that doesn't always stop her fence hopping

What breed of horse are you talking about? I have to say, there are plenty of breeds (like WBs) that I would most certainly NOT jump twice a week asa 4 year old. In fact, how much she did before I got her is probably the reason that my poor 9 year old was written off at 8. :( :(

shes warmblood x.....! (apaprantly)!

i wouldnt want to jump any horse whos 4 twice a week tbh..

:)

In that case I would be incredibly careful. Generally speaking WBs are some of the most slow maturing types and prone to joint troubles.

My beloved girl won the 4 year old 1.10 class at Scope, & was highly placed in the 1.20 5 year old class. I bought her 2 months before she turned 6, hardly jumped her in the next 2 years, and she was still a write off at 8 :( :( It's such a waste :(

Look after their legs and they'll look after you :)

i wasnt planning on jumping her at all tbh until she was 5 (may).... so sticking to low levels until november time and if shes doing well then i want to compete

if not - we do dressage comps until shes big and old enough to handle it :)

no rush for jumping at all!.... the plan was dressage anyhow so either is fine :)

good :) last thing i want is a ruined horse because i jumped her too much!

i didnt buy her to jump at all tbh but since i tried her the other week shes just taken to it and loves it :)

thanks for the advice :)

I jumped my 4yo once/twice a week for a limited period of time - literally as long as it took for her to know her job, and now she doesn't jump at all unless at shows (once every 6 weeks or so). Doing it more often when she was learning helped her keep that learning fresh so she could progress, but we kept the jumps as small as we could get away with, and it didn't take many weeks before she knew what she was doing round a course, through doubles etc, and had figured out her striding and things.
