How often do you ride in winter?

I'm being curious about how often everyone rides now the clocks have changed. This is my first winter as a horse owner. I have a 9-5 job which is getting rather stressful. During the week i've found it hard to make myself ride after work although my yard has an arena with floodlights.

In the summer I was riding 5-6 days a week and now dropped back to 3. My mare doesnt seem to mind at all. Shes quite good on weekends but struggles to concentrate when I ride her in the evening anyway.

I am considering going before work to ride and turnout. I'm on assisted DIY so she normally gets turned out for me in the morning.

So my question is how often do you ride and when in the day do you ride in the week during winter?

Winter - no school at mine - ride twice at weekends, one morning before work adn one evening either lesson or competition. So, in short 4x per week. However, bf going to ride new ned twice a week when she is off to improve fitness.

I ride both days at the weekend and as many days as I can during the week, it vary's depending on what work I'm doing.

HI

I only manage to ride my horse twice a week in the winter sat and sundays, which i think happens to a lot of horse owners i think if they are turned out all day it dosent matter how little you ride, and if you are working and this is all you can do, so be it.

Depends how much it is raining!!!!

I work full time (presently 08.30-16.30) so I ride after work - we are lucky to have a floodlight school at our yard, although it is outdoor so can be chilly

Now Bob is back into work I will ride 6 days a week to try and build topline/hindquarters/fitness

I ride six days a week. . .but then i am at school and can be at the yard by half three after school so i still have some light and time to ride.

We have no arena but i am lucky that I don't work full days on Mondays and Fridays so I try and ride 4 times a week in the winter....it doesn't always work out though, she gets ridden a minimum of twice a week

not enough

Weather permitting probably about 3 or 4 times a week

If its blowing a gale or lashing it down with rain then obviously I shan't bother but if its just cold then thats not a problem.

I like to get him out 3-4 times a week, but my OH's car has been off the road for weeks and he's not insured on my car so I have been going to work with him everyday

He's going on my insurance this week so hopefully I'll be back on track and finally get the woolly mammoth clipped!!

I try to ride every time that I go up to the horse I share so that's 3 or 4 times a week. Normally head over to the yard to be there at 3pm, muck out etc, ride and feed and am home by between 6 and 7pm.

I also work 9-5, have at least an hours commute each way, on top and have 2 horses, though only one in work. She is in rehab at the moment for arthritis in her hocks, so I have to ride her 4-6 times a week. I had been having to hack her out in the dark which was a night mare, not very safe even though we looked like a christmas tree with lights and flourescent everything. At last I can start building her up in the school, but still need to do a lot of hacking. So I am hacking her out 3 times a wek and schooling her 3 times. There are some days when I really can't be bothered, but once I'm on I do enjoy it and it is nice to be back riding after a long break. I do all my jobs in the morning, so the only thing I need to do after work is bring them in and ride her.

It does all depend on the weather. I rode today in pi$$ing down rain and blowing a gale. I am amazed we survivied!

This is my first winter out of education and to say I miss the easy routine would be an understatement! In an average week I work three full days (8am-6pm) and a few odd half days (8am-1pm or 1-6pm). I ride on my days off and on my half days. I occasionally finish at 4pm instead of 6pm, so ride in the field after work those days (I'm not allowed to school my horse (vet's orders) and am not allowed to trot so it's pretty boring!)
So, on average, I'd say four times a week weather permitting.

I work 9 - 5 as well. I ride both days at the weekend and twice during the week in the arena floodlights. Can't possibly hack out in the week as no-where is lit so I wouldn't be able to see a thing. Saying that when I was at school I used to hack 3/4 mile in the pitch black on the road then round the streetlit bit and back. I was lit up like a christmas tree mind you....on a 17.3hh exracehorse who had been placed in the grand national!!

I do have to go from yard to arena in the dark and it is 'interesting'. I don't do getting up ridiculously early unless I have to - so I ride after work. It's quite nice in the partial darkness.

I have access to an indoor and flood lit all weather outdoor but despite this I have started to cut down - think it's good to have a week break sometimes.

Will probably ride 3 times a week and lunge/long line once a week.

Once a week if I am lucky - I have 2 young children and part time job so usually no time on my own to go out hacking except the weekend, which is usually busy doing stuff with the family. Maybe try and lunge in the week when babe is having his afternoon nap but no school, lights etc makes it difficult.

Dont think my horse minds at all but he did enjoy going out for a lovely hack yesterday. I just enjoy pottering around the yard / field though so I dont worry too much either (as long as I get my once a week fix!)

It hasn't really changed from the summer so I ride both days at the weekends then normaly 3 evenings a week, sometimes 4 or 2 if I am slacking. We are normlay out competing most weekends so need to keep on top of his fitness for that and the odd hunt we do. Sadly not much hacking gets done though as I leave home at 6.45am and then dont get to the yard till 6.45pm. The weather doesn't seem to make much differnce as it rained all through the summer too grrrrr. Would love an indoor school though how lucky you all are with them!!

not often enough - I work 9-5 during the week so only really get to ride at weekends unless I can slope off from work early. I don't have access to a floodlit school during the week at the moment but I do have a small schooling area that is large enough to lunge in, so my boy can be lunged a couple of times during the week. I am hoping to be rescheduling my lessons to one weekday evening at a local indoor school (will need to box over there as is too far to hack to) so I can increase my boys workload during the week.

Work 9 - 5.30 5 days a week. Exercise every day before work unless am taking a Tuesday off to go hunting in which case horse has day off on Weds!! Also if hunting on a Sat he will have Sunday off. Have 5 different rides to do round the farm all of which include a good gallop and lots of hill work. Keeps him very fit!! Think he is glad to be inside today though!!
