Ride with out stirrups??? (And not on that bareback ride down to the far off paddock but school/hack)

Just wondering... I rarely do anymore (mainly as my dressage horse has a trot I can barely sit with them) but just wondered if it's something people do regularly or only when forced too on a lesson

I used to ride Lucy bareback all the time (proper hacking I mean trotting along roads and cantering across fields) I often couldn't be bothered to tack her up. :o so I would just put her bridle on and jump on. If I did have a saddle I often used to just take my feet out the stirrops and ride along without them But then she was the safest pony in the world (when she wanted to be :p;):D:D)

Herbs on the otherhand I think I would die if i rode him without stirrops never mind bareback. :(

In all honesty, I don't often take my stirrups away in schooling sessions as I just like to save his back if I'm honest.
However, I do ride bareback a fair bit...used to do it 2 or 3 times a week, especially for jumping :) Went out for a XC hack the other day with a friend bareback for a good hour or so.....though now have the bruised legs to prove it! LOL.

I ride without stirrups every fortnight as it helps my seat and my horse. I haven't ridden my new horse bareback as he's a bit more quirky then my old one, but I used to do lots with my old one bareback, including gymkhanna and jumping :D

In fact when I was younger and fearless I was on a hack with my friend and I took my saddle off and rode him across the common, sat on him backwards! :p

Not enough - and this post has reminded me of that. I'm going to do it once a week from now on - its so good for your seat!

Before I went to uni I worked for a dressage trainer, and she made me ride all the horses without stirrups until I learnt to sit. I used to always ride in sitting trot, and make myself ride for at least 30 mins on my own horses without stirrups. Since uni I have gotten very slack with my riding, but as soon as my new lad is up an running (just been backed) I will go back to riding without stirrups again - nothing better for balance and concentration!! Whenever I ride a difficult horse, I kick my feet out the stirrups as it helps me to sit deeper and use my seat rather than rely on my hands and heels!

I am awful! I make my boys do this on their pony, but have forgotten to do it myself!! Thank you for reminding me. I shall make sure I do it more often now.

every week for the past month as part of a lunge lesson to help lengthen my legs...had a bad fall last week though, cantered where i usually do after the lunge work..no stirrups, my horse got faster and faster and..splat! Now im worried about it happening again!:(
