how often does everyone jump their horse at home and between competitions? i dont much at all but wondered what all else do? feeling very rusty pre event season but don't want to over jump.....!!!!
I try to jump at home once a week to add variety to schooling, but don't jump at comps at the moment as my poy started to refuse and so am letting him enjoy playing at home for a while.
With me it depends on the horse and its experience and also I'm not very brave when I jump at home & say "thats fine"!
Ideally if I compete say once a fortnight I just jump once or twice inbetween but with my oldtimer I may only have a pop a few days before the event. Having said that, I did not let him down over the winter as I BSJA'd him too. I would probably go xc schooling once for my benefit.
However, with my new horse I would definitely take her xc schooling at least a couple of times and may try and go to a couple of hunter trials too. I still wouldn't jump more than once a week though, whether I've got a competition or not.
I do a really intensive jumping session about once a week. We do something a little bit different each time, but I use it as a fittening exercise as much as anything.
Also my boy lives to jump so if I ration it he gets completely over-excited and I have to spend 15 minutes trying to get him 'bored' with the whole issue so that he can concentrate properly.
I jump my horse twice a week, hes not the best jumper so we have to do alot of low gymnastic exercises to get him thinking and listening to my wait, as hes a big strong lad.
Also when i school him on the flat we do alot of canter cavaletti to help him learn that he can use his shoulders now.
Usually once a week to keep them ticking over... doesn't have to be very much at all. I have also tried recently to incorporate some small jumping into my flatwork, as I have found this can really improve the canter.
I rarely jump at home as we only have a couple of jumps. At the moment, the only time I jump is when I have a lesson or a competition as we don't have an arena. In the summer I try and jump once a week depending on the ground. I'm lucky that my trainer who owns my horse has a fantastic 60x40m arena with a full set of jumps so I'll go there every so often for a proper jump. I'm going to try and do more gymnastic exercises this summer once I've bought some more jumps!
