how often to clip

I have just started to do ridden cob classes at local level and want to know do i need to keep clipping him all the time or do i sometimes just clip his legs and let them blend before i take him to show? Any ridden cob enthusiats out there to help? Someone told me judges dont like the just clipped look and you should let the coat grow a bit???

i clip out my cob all the time but only for my own conveinience(sp)
depends what it looks like on how coat is growing.
should think 1 week before shows would be good.
also different blades cut to different lenghts,fine being the shortest then medium then course.
