How long do you go?
First winter I have had my own clippers which means freedom, previously I've paid others and held out for as long as possible and had three at the most.
But I'm wondered whether I should keep on top of it 3/4 weekly to reduce wear on clipper blades and keep pony looking tidy. Does need to be clipped as in full work and gets sweaty

Thank you

Some of mine have had a second clip already as it is so mild and they were sweating. I just clip when they need it and don't have a set timing of how often to clip.

All depends on how quickly your pony's coat grows, i find the first clip never lasts as long and go over my horses within a few weeks to tidy them up, I tend to do mine once a month anyway thru the winter? Mine is in full work and at shows most weekends so like to keep them looking smart! :)

I clip my cob every 3-4 weeks all year round. Might not do her legs every time in the summer but having gone from hairy bog monsters I dragged out the field, I now can't stand her not looking perfect all the time.

mine are clipped about every 3 weeks when hunting or competing in the winter, in the summer I clip my ISH a couple of times if he gets hot and to help his skin. He's on his 5th clip since the end of August

I clip the cob every 3 - 4 weeks depending on coat growth and the ISH about every 2-3 months. he's very fine coated though.

I only usually do 2 clips a year because I loathe clipping and two seems to be the minimum - november and january. Might do three this year just so they look tidier :)

Having a hairy native, I clip him monthly starting in September with the last clip in early December. He re-grows about a 3/4" in a month for that period. From December on, his winter coat is in in full, and he doesn't really regrow much. I then may or may not take off the rest by Feb/March (he's not fully clipped, but has a blanket or similar).

Every 3 weeks usually, and the best way to keep your clippers clean and sharp is to use a 50/50 mix of Diesel and engine oil. Dip the head in the mix with the clippers running, just over half way up the blades. The mix flushes out all the dirt and grease and also cools the blades. Wipe off excess before continuing to clip. Avoid letting the mix drain back into the motor.

I got 25 full clips from one set of blades without re sharpening.

Once a month before Christmas, once in total after. My old instructor lived by this!

I pay for mine to be clipped (I borrowed a clippers once and had a go myself. Hated it, was rubbish at it and horse was a pig) so I take a strip off their necks in October with my Liveryman Elements then leave it as late as possible (mid-end Nov) to get them fully clipped and only do them once.

Me too, mine also doesn't like it so it's not a pleasant experience. I will also have to do three as I'm already on my second, may even need to do four at this rate.

I used to clip about every 3 weeks until I stopped hunting, my daughters ponies had their last clips - everything off from tip to toe (or first if they had been off all winter) about March, I couldn't be faffing around with brushing out winter coats before showing started.

I clipped professionally and had two sets of large clippers and about 8 sets of blades. My blade care was pretty much the same as Tnavas.
