Yes another boring suregrow thread :D

What age would you say stop feeding suregrow?

We was talking about feeds today at the yard and I mentioned that my colt was being fed suregrow and one person replied that now he is a yearling he should be on a 'proper' adult/conditioning feeds such as top spec conditioning cubes and alfa a.

Have read other threads that have said keep youngsters off alfa a. But I assumed as he was obviously still growing/developing that he would be on suregrow for quite abit longer

opinions please :)

My appy is 3 and a half and has only just come off it onto big boy feed. He's been on it from 5 months old.
My 2yo colt is on it and will be til he's in work and needs big boy feed. Conditioning feeds at this stage in your youngsters development are the last thing he needs! You dont want to end up with a fat baby on young developing joints. Its just a recipe for disaster!!!
Stick with good old suregrow, its fantastic stuff :)

Suregrow is just a low calorie balancer, so would be appropriate for any age of horse. At your horse's age then you could keep him on this or transition to any other feed of this type e.g. Spiller's Ultimate Balancer or Bailey's Lo-Cal Balancer.
Agree with the previous poster that there is absolutely no need to feed any conditioning cube, or for that matter any pony nuts, horse nuts, growing mix or whatever else the feed companies try and get you to buy. All it will do is encourage growth too quickly, and lead to fat being put on.
I would feed good quality hay/haylage with a balancer.

Thanks for both your replies, that was what I thought (overfeeding/joints/growing too fast etc) will stick to what he's on then as he seems to be doing fine :)

I can only say for myself and I leave mine on it until after their second winter, I think they need it to that age at least because it gives them everything they need to develop safely. I introduce small amounts of other (grown up!) feed as well that second winter so use it as the major part of the ration that year.
It is a balancer that can be used for any age and type even though it's primarily used for young and breeding stock.

I think I would as it would cut down on the calories for her as you don't want her to put too much weight on but I would make a point of ringing D & H first to get their specialist advice.
Put it this way, I would feed Suregrow before any other type of balancer.

I would check individual feed company information before moving onto anything else. Many feeds are only recommended for 4yo and over (including Baileys LoCal Balancer if my memory serves me correctly!). I have found most "weaning/foal" type feeds can be fed up to 2yrs old, but they are all different.
