How old do you need to be to learn to ride?

I have been offered a little 11hh welsh section A pony for my son.
My son has just turned 2 and although showing lots of interest in horses, I don't want to be a pushy Mum and get a pony for him only for him not to be interested.
There are no ponys on the yard where we are that I could try him on, so do I get this pony or should I wait until he is a little older?
 
My niece is 2 and loves coming to ride. However as my horse is 15.2 she insists she needs a smaller one. Pity cant afford to get her one ;)
Think it depends on the child.
 
I was 2yrs old when I showed interest. I have a daughter who is 13months & she gets really excited when she comes up the stables & if I sit her on one of mine the smile on her face is just unreal :D
 
My granddaughter has been around horses from the day she was born and sat on a horse for the first time at 9 months. She is 4 and a half now and rides on the lead rein and has a string of ponies that she rides (her mum has her own riding school). She loves riding but also loves the day to day care of the horses - feeding, grooming etc.
 
My daughter has also been around horses from day 1! They're at home so she's no choice!! She's been sitting on then since a about 10 months and absolutely loves it! Trouble is she's learnt to click her tongue, so she sits there clicking away! If it was me on my exracer especially doing it, I'd be in timbucktu! They just know! I'm looking at getting her a pony next year when she's 2, so long as she still seems to love my boys!
 
Mine started at two! Since then I have been told (NOT by her) that I 'forced' her into it...... Bovine effluent :p:p My return argument was that, had it been a boy, it would have had a football placed at it's feet from the moment it could stand ;)
