Bit confused as to how my tb mare has managed to do this.. There's nothing in her field which could be harmful, couple of rocks half burried by the gate but that's it. The shoe hasn't actually twisted, just the one side at her heal has bent inwards? And the shoe is still on there solid as a rock! Farriers coming Thursday morning as he was due anyway. So any guesses as to how?!

I know those shoes are solid and there's no way I'd be able to bend one even slightly!

Also lucky as I'm off to Hartpury showjumping this Saturday I'm so glad my farrier can make it before :D

Maybe her foot grew on one side overnight?

:D

LOL!!! I thought it was odd when I seen it earlier, it wasn't like that yesterday :D!!!

She's probably over-reached, caught the heel of the front shoe with the toe of the hind and 'sprung' it!

When you farrier comes, I'd be inclined to query with him why he shoes her with such SHORT shoes - they don't fit her at all!

Possibly! But then she's unshod behind, could a barefoot hoof be able to do that AND cause no damage? (to the barefoot hoof?) Also I've never noticed her shoes being short until this pic! I'll see how they look when he's re-shod her on Thursday, possibly get another picture I could send to you to see what you think then? :)

I don't know butthe shoe seems awfully short for her foot so unless it's moved forwards there's no way she could have overreached.

Well I think her and another horse decided to do swopsies and try on each others shoes!! Is there another horse in the field walking around like a child in it's mummy's shoes??!!!!

Nope, the shoe is as normal if you look at it when she's stood up, other than it tucks inwards on the inside of her foot..

Could somebody show me a picture of a shoe that fits a hoof correctly please? She's never had any problems with her feet in the 5 / 6 years I've had her, touch wood never been lame at all. She doesn't over reach often, I've never noticed her doing it..

Haha, no chance of that as she's been turned out on her own for the past couple of days (my fattie has had to come off of the big field of lots of grass for a bit). Plus she's the only one shod between all that are kept there :D

I think because of the way that the shoe has twisted it probably looks short but isnt.... Although I would be a bit worried about waiting until thursday becauses of the pressure on the frog if the shoe is on tight.

A kick can do that, either from another horse ( so twice the impact ) or its owner lashing out. My old mare used to love a good roll and spend quite a lot of time down on the floor rubbing her back and mane before flopping over left and right three times before springing up for a massive shake. Quite often she'd deform her hind shoes doing this and even when no damage was apparent you could hear damn great clonks ringing out.

I reckon your mount's tiddly tootsies could have fitted inside my mare's as she took 15" on the front and 14.5" on the back and had the body to match but yours would still be powerful enough to do it.

Squeak - I don't have much choice, the farrier I use is reliable and excellent with my horses. All of the other farriers around my pony mare has seen off and they refused to come out to shoe / trim!! And one or two getting rough with them.. So not only does my pony have trust issues with them, so do I :(

1stclassalan - The shoe is on tight to the hoof but I can get the hoof pick between the shoe and frog so it's not causing major pressure. She's now in her stable with a big bed of straw to pad everything out until he arrives :)

That's fine if you can still get a pick down the frog groove - sometimes my old dears were so tight I'd have to take the shoe off - that's where being my size and quite handy with tools was a bonus - I kept a hammer, buffer and pinchers in the kit especially for this so I'd be the first to say that farriers earn their money!
