Does my TB manage to get himself a hole in his leg? There's no wire, there's nothing in the field to catch himself on, yet this morning he'd got quite a deep hole about 1cm across just above and to the side of his knee on his near fore. Now he has a nice puffy knee, certainly not lame as he did a beautiful elevated trot and a crazy canter when I put him out in the new field, but this is not the first time he has damaged himself. Fortunately he loves attention and doesn't mind the hosing and packing the wound with cream. He's also had a bute and is out in the small paddock as I'd rather he moved around than stood in the stable filling up, but how did he do it?

The big girl came in with a scratch down her side, right across the girth area (just as she was coming back into work after a bad back :( ) Eventually found about 1/4 inch of three nails that had come through the wood on a shed which forms part of the boundary of the field, fairly unbelievable that she had found one at just the right place, also took a fair bit of finding for us!. I have no idea what your horse has found to damage himself on, but it will take you ages to find it! ;0

He's a TB!!! They are made to break themselves - mine once cut his ear so deep it looked like it would fall off - he did this by getting a paper cut on a leaf!!

If he doesn't come in with a new cut every 2 weeks I think it's a miracle!

Pure talent sounds about right lol. There are no nails in the fencing, it's all electric wire on insulators there's no shed and we have the field topped regularly so I don't think there are any sharp bits or the topper would have found them. I think the only thing it can be is when he lays down to rest and catches himself with his feet when getting up, when he goes to sleep he's out for the count, snores nearly as bad as my OH but if something startles him he's up on his feet pdq.

Any trees at the edge of the field? A livery on our yard once tried to climb a tree & punctured his leg in a similar spot

No, no trees or bushes, his shade comes from the back of a shelter which isn't in his field, and an electric fence runs between him and the shelter. The electric fence has a mega energiser on so he has great respect for it. I can only think he's caught himself, just where it is seems strange.
