I think if you are generally nice to them they will 'forgive' a single incident and forget about it. They remember repeated behaviour, so if you constantly hit them, shout at them, beat them, they will remember that and become wary.

I think everyone gets cross with their horse sometimes, or over-reacts slightly, but problems begin when the over-reactions or bad tempers become routine and 'acceptable'.

10 seconds if that with Chancer. I can give Chancer a tap with a whip when he is destroying something and he is instantly back next to me asking for a rub. He never sulks and when told off springs back instantly - he is the equine equivalent of a springer spaniel

My old Miss Delia would carry a grudge. If told off, she would turn her backside on you and sulk and would not even take a polo. After a lot of grovelling and offering treats she would reluctantly accept and forgive.

If you tell Cairo off, you get the blind side turned at you, then his bum and a huge fart to make sure you got the message.

With my herd, I've found consistence to be the key - there are strict behavioural rules which I always, consistently enforce, so they know the boundaries and seldom break them except experimentally.
But equally, I am very quick to praise and reward them (even with treats) for even the little things like volunteering feet, moving over when asked etc...this keeps them keen to work for/with me.
I did some in hand training with my two youngsters in the autumn...and they were so keen to do it that they'd queue up at the gate although I'd just have hayed them.
