My boss and I were riding out today across a local common, my boss on an older horse and me on a not-long-broken 3yo, who we're just hacking out for a bit before we turn her away for winter. She's quite nervous and spooky, so we took her on the common to get away from traffic etc. Anyway, we're riding along and all of a sudden these two riders blast past us from behind in full gallop, which resulted in a lot of broncing from the youngster, and she wouldn't walk for the rest of the hack. Is there actually anything you can do about these sorts of inconsiderate riders, or do you just have to pray that you won't encounter any? Even the older horse was disturbed.

Yes it is very rude. Did you shout to them as you heard them approaching at gallop? I'd try and find out where they are from and go and confront them.

QR Haha-- They shot out of nowhere didn't really have time to grasp what was going on, I was just focused on staying on! It's not the first time, a similar situaton happened last year, my only hope is to maybe park my car near the common and see if they return!

People galloping by without checking is the worst of bad manners when riding.

Yeah nailed you pretty much missed out on last nights post where other people tried to antagonize a conversation on sarcoids, luckily I was able to have a sincere discussion with several people on the topic at hand, your sarky comments are a little late so I'd just leave it out....do you have anything constructive to add to this post?

No they both looking relatively in control, they were going for it though! I wish there was some way to identify them, my health was seriously compromised, I could've come off that youngster. I just couldn't believe the inconsideration of it all!

Its very inconsiderate and dangerous as well, anything could have happened ,you could have had a nasty fall and hurt yourself, i have found some people do it on purpose others just dont have a clue how stupid it is.

i hope their horse wasnt bolting :/

[/ QUOTE ] If it was then they should have shouted that they couldn't stop to at least give TT and companion time to assess the situation.

From recent experience, I can honestly say I know how it feels being on a young horse and that happening!

I was at a xc course schooling with my friend and her two horses. I was on a four year old mare stood still.

We hadn't realised but a few other riders were on course. They jumped into the field we were in and came from behind the mare I was sat on, she freaked, went straight up and over on top of me, crushed my ankle. The only ride I had off that course was the blue flashy light kind

They just seemed ignorant and oblivious, I didn't see their faces but my boss said they looked quite young, but then surely they should've been in school. I usually wear a high vis jacket with young horse on it, but I wasn't since we weren't encountering traffic, perhaps I will frm now on on the common to give people at least slight incentive to slow down!

Lauracross that's awful, is your ankle ok now? I know, in a way I'm advantaged in that I do all the riding away for the yard so I'm used to them broncing, but I've not been on anything that bronced that big! I'm thankful i'm uninjured.

To be honest TT It shouldn't matter whether you are wearing hi-vis gear or not or stating that you are on a young horse they should have walked and asked if it is OK to pass. If their horse had gotten away from them they should have shouted and being young is no excuse.

Yes I agree, but sometimes you have to do things just to guard your own safety! We were going to turn her away after that hack but want to give her a few more now, don't want her stopped on that bad experience! It's unbelievable what some people are like.

Out of interest lauracross, did you take any action against the riders? It seems you may be due compensation!

No believe it or not! The best part is I work in Solicitors too lol! The field I was in was surrounded by trees, you jumped through the trees, they wouldn't have seen me until last minute! So thought it was pointless really! Totally accident! Valid lesson learnt - not riding anyone elses horses ever again! Sticking to my own lol

I think what Haha meant was not to scream but to atleast try and either avoid the other horses or make them aware of your situation if you are indeed being run away with, but it's regardless in this instance anyway because the horses were not bolting.
