How safe is your hat?

Typical everyday hat is safer than show one. Everyday in Champion Ventair, show is GPA.

Shamefully i didnt even read up on my hat before i parted with the cash!
Have just purchased a Pro Classic- it looks lovely but didnt score too well!
I have to admit i really dont like the new s/j motorbike helmit types-i must be very old fashioned!

Sorry to be dim, what do they mean on the tables as small, medium and large, crush? what are they referring to? the force exerted on them?

So when competing your head needs less protection?

The only time I've come a cropper recently is at a practise fence at a show jumping comp... granted I landed on my face, but still!!!

Thats an interesting read!

I have to admit I didn't check safety before buying mine - I went for one that fitted well, with advice from expert shop assistant!. I assumed that as it had passed some safety standards it would be up to the job.
Having said that, I've dented and cracked a couple of skull caps in the past from nasty falls, so do always buy a well known brand, rather than the latest fashion

So if you've paid £250 for a GPA speed air you might be a bit shocked at its poor score!!

Yeah, but they look great, and at least if you are carted off in the meat van then your hair shouldn't smell too bad when you get to hospital

I think they do to an extent- especially when it comes to parents buying childrens hats etc although the GPA having a bad safety rating won't change anything- it is a fashion statement more than anything. I was concidering changing my Jockey Skull from a J3 to a Champion Ventair anyway but that has made my mind up

My hat only has One Star for a Crush I cant believe it and I am actually quite shocked

... cant believe I paid over £100 for something that has such poor performance

The Small, Medium, Large I take it those are the hat size categories?

ETS lol @ rambo

Ive just ordered a Vent air scull, and looking at those am feeling very smug as is the most protective in my "size" range

Very pleased.

Cant believe mine is only a 1* either

Although am looking to buy a new one so this will prove very useful - champion all the way it seems

Although does anyone know what the collins ltc-100 is??

GPA's can't be that bad- I fell off and smashed my head through the wooden wall of an indoor arena (Merrist Wood!) with my old GPA on and am still here to tell the tale! The hat did crack and die though!

On a more serious note, I wonder why they categorised the Champion Ventair as a traditional as opposed to a modern lid

I was actually about to swap my Ventair for a Speed Air too.....and probably still will tbh

Not sure either - would have put them as modern.

Anyway why do you want to part with £250? If you bash your head you'll be less inclined to replace it!

Well, for starters you can get them a lot cheaper than that now...but more importantly, I just get sooo hot in the ventair...especially in the summer...that I think the risk of having a less effective hat is balanced against the increased risk of me doing something stupid due to heat exhaustion

I've already stopped using the ventair at home and now have a highly ventilated Champion (looks more like a cycle helmet tbh ) which I find so much more comfortable to ride in at home.

Ah I use a Casco Arcus - its very ventilated and I rarely get sweaty. Not the most attractive hat, but few of them are!

However I now object to clunky hats, as this one is only 200g!!

Just googled the Casco Arcus...it's very similar to the Champion Universal Helmet that I now use and I see it is highly rated too as is the Universal ! I had (wrongly) assumed that my Universal wouldn't be too good and so hadn't used it in competitions. I'm still not sure the strap is too clever though

Interesting, I have a cheapish Dublin hat that was put to the test when Molly bucked me so high up I did a full twist and landed directly on my head on the concrete. It didn't crack at all and I'm still here to tell the tale! Also see my other choice champion rates highly too, so I should have a safe noggin!

This gets more and more interesting !

The Troxel Spirit, which also scores very well, looks almost identical to the Champion Universal, and only costs about USD40....which is about 20 quid !
