When we get a nice dry day I'm going to pull my mares mane and forelock to smarten her up a bit. I use a solo comb as she hates it being pulled. My question is how short do you have your horses manes and when doing the forelock do you shape it a little so it's shorter at the sides and longer in the middle? How short do you take the forelock to (at the moment it's nearly reached her mouth!!

Actually whilst I'm asking can you pull a tail with a solocomb? I have never in my life pulled a tail - how do you do it exactly?

Hi,
Manes are a personal choice, I pull my one's to about 4 to 5 inches I can't stand the hedgehog look!! As long as I can get good plaits in then i'm happy.
I use one of the smart tails rakes for their tails, love them soooooo easy!!
I have never used a solo comb so can't comment sorry.

I pull my horses' mane to about 3 inches long, so that when we go any faster than a walk it stands straight up. I find it funny

I do her tail with a solocomb too - you have to be careful around the top or you get a bog brush effect. If you do it cautiously and get as close to the roots as possible, its doable - it probably wouldn't stand up in a showing class but will look smart from a few meters away! Lots of tail bandaging required afterward to encourage it to lie flat, and it looks best a week or two after 'pulling'.

I like my mane about 3 inches long - makes for good plaits, but if it's thick from using a solo comb, maybe a little longer as it'll be very hard to plait if too short.

For the tail, I use clippers, or scissors for a really close effect.
