How should a correctly-fitted martingale stop look?

Should it lie at an angle with the neckstrap threaded through it? Pic would be great if anyone has one Thanks.

That's the best way to stop things moving, but it's a pain to clean under it.
Excuse the awful riding, and the angry looking pony...not a great pic, but you might be able to see it...

Ah, we were waiting for the bell in a jump off, I asked him to go from walk to canter and he protested... It looks worse than it was.
