As a lady of a certain age, with no spring left, my 15.2 is becoming a bit of a heave if i have to get off with no prospect of a leg back up. I am 5ft 8 and 11 stone so how small could i go. would a 14hh fell be too small for me as i have one in mind.

im 24, 5ft2, and 11 stone (although my doc did say they didnt think i was that heavy) and ride a 14.1 NF no worries....

If it takes up your leg, and you feel more comfy and they are carrying you ok then go for it :)

thanks, he would mainly be a companion but i would like to get onboard occasionaly for a hack around. nothing to energetic mind you.

I dont think it would be too small at all, as they are a chunky breed i dont think your legs will be too long either but theres only one way to find out :)

i have a fell pony who 13.2hh and im approx 5ft 9 and 9.5 stone, he carries me no bother, jumps and everything.
they are stocky ponies and bearly notice you on their back, lovely nature, very willing but can be very cheeky :D

I'm sure you'll not only be fine, you'll have a lot of fun! I'm just a bit taller than you and love pony squishing - they seem to have a good time too:D

PS The Mongol hordes did pretty well on teeny ponies....

Fells are great weight carriers so will carry 11 stone no problem. :) If you dont have experience with fells though i would suggest you think of buying an older pony such as 8yrs old and up. They tend to go through a terrible teenage stage between the age of 4 and 8 and can be very bolshy and dominant. They are also very strong and can lock there necks and take off with you. I remember my 6 yr old fell gelding locked his neck and bolted when my mum was leading him to the barn for the farrier. She ended up being dragged through the snow! lol :D Between 4 and 8 he went through stages of biting, bolting, kicking and rearing and because he was so strong it took a lot of quick thinking and discipline to handle him safely. But as he got older he started to calm down and settle and i ended up selling him as safe PC pony to an 8year old girl. :D

Good luck! :

any good nice native will fit the bill. highlands are lovely as are fells and dales. and tend to ride bigger than their height. so now you need to find a nice 14/14.2 native. good luck and enjoy.

I'm same height and a smidge lighter and ride my friends 13.2 fell no prob. Takes little while to get used to size difference (15.2 sports horse and 17hh hunter!) but he's brill fun. Ditto them being bolshy little sods as youngsters tho!
