as titled really.

I broke my ankle and heel 6wks ago and was discharged from the hospital yesterday. The hospital have given me a removable pot to wear for 2 weeks while out and about but walking on it at home with out anything as suggested.
Im walking on it fine and when i asked the doctor when i could start riding again he couldn't answer me. Im thinking 3/4 weeks but what do others suggest?

When I fractured my ankle I rode a day or two after the plaster was removed. I took it easy just hacking in walk.

really?? well i might see how i get on this weekend walking on it and then book saddle fitter in as in the last 6 wks the already tubby tb x cob has exploded in to loads more blubber ;)and dont think my saddle will fit.

are you having physio at all?

i didnt break mine, but i tore ligaments and was on crutches for a while. It was about a month before i rode again but getting on and off was tricky, i could only use a high mounting block. I also found my whole position went to pot, i had been compensating for the injury and Im afraid to say over a year later Im only just starting to get strength back. Ive had pain in my hip from compensating and a lot of tension in my back. Would defo recommend going to see a sports injury physio.

I rode with my leg in plaster with my foot in the stirrup leather, no stirrup. And just kept going afterwards, but nearly thirty years later there is some weakness, whether I caused that by nearly always wearing boots I don't know!

no i havent been offered physio but going to look in to it and also bu8y an ankle support

I broke my ankle last year and was in plaster for 6 weeks. I then had an ankle support for when I was out and about. Doctor 1 said I shouldn't ride for 6 months after coming out of plaster  You can imagine what happened to that bit of advice. Doctor 2 said I could start riding when I could start driving - that would be when I felt I could do an emergency stop. His advice was don't fall off though.

I had to pay for physio and wish I had started as soon as the cast was off.

While some have ridden early and got away with it BE CAREFUL!! ankles are one of the worst bones to break and you broke your heal bone too!

I would wait until you are at least 3 months. Ankles can collapse and if they do you end up having a fusion or if your very very very lucky like me you get an ankle replacement that will last a few years, then will need fusion.

I did everything I was told and still mine collapsed (it was put together wrong)
so I ended up with an ankle replacement because I have rheumatoid arthritis and to fuse it would cause more problems) That came loose and had to have more surgery

So please don't rush it. However if it feels good do some physio there are plenty of exercises even online heel raises are very good to start with. Then if you can do that I don't think gentle riding would hurt but STOP BEFORE it gets tired, tired tendons and ligaments won't support the bones very well

I've recently broken my ankle and started a threat that you may find helpful. Someone has put a link to some ankle supports and other websites. There are lots of physio exercises on the net.
