Hi, Just looking for some ideas with regards to my geldings height. I have had him for 4 weeks now and bought him at 15.3 1/2 HH. He is 3 yrs 6months old and 7/8ID 1/8 TB. On his passport he is supposed to make an adult height of 16.2hh. My vet says I will be pushed for him to make this. What do you guys think? When will he reach his full height? Any ideas apprieciated as I am totally rubbish with this sort of thing!

Thanks.

I think he mite make it. i have a 5 yeer old TB who is still growing =] Altho TB tend to develop quite quickly, ID mite b quite 'late' growers so i think he mite make it! maybe im bonkers, and have no idea wot im on about but hes got at least another year of growing i should think
x

Irish Dafts are big horses, and tend to be late developers, he might still struggle to make it though. My horse is IDxTBxConne and grew 1 1/2 inches between when I purchased him 3yrs9months, and now!

its a tough one. My ID x Hanno was 14.2 at 2 years 9months and stands at 16hh at five years 10 months. But at 3 years risong four i would say he was about 15.2hh. Shadow may frow to 16.1 but i doubt it now, i think he will fill out for than anything! Your boy may make 16.2 but he certainly wont be any bigger. i would expect 16.1hh

ID's seem to take ages to finish maturing (from my experience) i would say he will be fully grown at 5/6 years and then will spend another year filling out. Although he has some thoroughbred in him and i think they mature a little faster.

My 16.3 was 15.1 as a yearling, I bought him at just 4 and he was just under 16.1 then - personally doubt he will make 16.2 but could be wrong. My lad is 1/2TB, 1/4 ID, 1/4 Welsh D

You may squeeze another hand out of him. The Irish Draft element may make him a late developer, so you never know. More likely to finish at the 16hh mark though I would guess.

No he is of unknown breeding but I have been told that his registered name is after his dad. My boy is Super TrooperII and his dad was supposed to be Super Trooper but I can't find anything out!?

Hard to tell. Bailey- (ISH) was 16.1hh and quite fine as a 3/4YO, he is now 5 rising 6 and is nearer 17.2hh

Vet didn't think he would get far over the 16.2hh mark

It's definate possibilty, our girl has similar breeding and grew approx 4 inches after we bought her as a 3 year old. It took quite a long time though. I think she was probably fully developed by the age of 7. Warning though not only did she grow upwards but she filled out hugely (see pics in picture gallery under 'GinaGem's Gem and the family!)

I have the same question with my horse - he's 1/2 TB, 1/2 ID and will be 2 years old this spring. He stands at about 15.1 at the mo, tho his bum is significantly higher! Any ideas what height he will make?

Actually what do you think about my other horse - he's a warmblood (1/4 danish WB, 1/4 Holstein, 1/4 Hann, 1/4 Selle-francais), One grandsire is Dallas and the other is Broadstone Landmark. He's will be 6 years old in May and stands at 17.1 / 17.2 at the mo. When I last had the chiro out she said she keeps her horse at a warmblood dressage yard and from her experience they don't stop growing until they're about 7/8 years old and she predicted my one will end at about 18hh! What do you think??

I read about this way of measuring a youngster to get their final height and I have to say I've tried it on a few horses and it seems to work.
Take a flexible tape measure put one end on the knee joint, that is the place when you pick up the front leg you can find a groove in the knee. Usually about half way down the flat of the knee. Then follow the shape of the leg, this is why you need a flexible tape, until you reach the coronary band (where the hair of the leg meets the hoof). This measure in inches, is what your horse will make in height. So if it measures 16 and a half inches, your horse will be 16.2hh.
Have to add the ID x TB we had grew 2 inches from a 4 yearold to 7 year old,so they can keep going

Haven't read above posts but horses spesh big horses like Id don't mature till egiht. My lad *ISH* was brough in summer as 16.1hh and now 16.3hh and hes an 'irish' six although seven because 1st jan thing.

From previous experience on T.b's mine have kept growing until about 6 years old. I had a two year old 15.1 who has made 17.2 aged six. The reply on how to measure with the tape is correct and I have done this for my arab yearling, who I am hoping and praying will make min 15hh. I am feeding her lots to make her grow into a big strong girlie.

My boy was 3.5 when brought him, and was 16h and half an inch. He has prob grown about an inch in the last 18mnth (now just 5) and saddler reckons he'll make 16.2-16.3hh

He is ISH of unknown breeding too......

MY lady (who is nearly 5) has grown an Inch in two months - I am hoping for a growth sprt as she's 15.1 1/2 so i'd like another inch to get past 15.2 for eventing. My friends do keep saying they think she'll end up nearly 16Hh as sha was a racer etc.

OMG we tried the tape thing last night - its accurate on Asti - 15 inches and she is 15 hands and not likely to grow at 14 years old...

Tried Byter next - 15 and a half inches, 15.2 - 17 years old - again correct and not likely to change any time soon!

Soooo... onto the not even 3 year old polar bear..... and the measurement was.... 16 and a half inches!!!! 16.2!!!!! She's gonna be mahoosive!!!!!

She's currently 15.2 and a half on her withers, 16hh nearly on her bum... and she's not even 3 til June! PMSL as my sister nearly passed out - she was thinking 15.2 to 16hh seeing as both parents are 15.2, though we know the stallion has been throwing big - ie they have 3 x 16hh of their own out of a 15hh/15.1 mare...

Stepladder anyone?
