How tall will my yearling be? He’s just turned 15 months and he’s currently measuring 16.1 1/2 at the wither and 16.2 1/2 at croup. I’ve not had one this tall at this age before so just wondered what he’s likely to end up at!

Jeez! I mean I’ve nothing against big horses but his mum and dad are both 16.2 & 16.3 so I wasn’t expecting a giant

what’s a string test? 🤔
There's a few ways but I usually take a piece of string from elbow to ergot then take that length upwards from the elbow to give the approximate adult height.
There is also one where you measure from coronet band to the center of the knee, that length in inches is the height in hands.

I am not sure if it works for yearlings but a good way to find out is to use a piece of string.

You put the string from the elbow to the fetlock, cut the string.

Then put the same piece of string from the elbow to the wither, the excess of string above the wither shows you how much more the horse will grow.

Sorry, somehow, i can't see the be able to explain this better.

Here in Switzerland, it's a old trick used by people for years.

It's usually pretty accurate.

My yearling is not far off that height . I’d say he’s about 16hds at present , I’ve string tested and it’s predicted approx 17.2 .
A tad bigger than I hoped ! Mum is 16.1 and grandma is 15.2 . Dad 16.3 .
Full sister who is a year older is bigger at the minute . I’m too scared to measure her 🤣

Mine was that big as a yearling.
He is now 16.3hh as a 2yro.

I'm expecting him to be 17.2hh as a 4-5yro and 18hh once he's in proper work and fully furnished (as a 6-7yro).

Thankfully I LOVE a big horse, anything over 17hh will make me happy 😁

Have you found a long enough string to try it yet?
Well! I did it tonight! I did the string test, put it up against the measuring stick, and he comes out at just over 18hh! 😳😳
I thought what a load of rubbish, he won’t be that big! So I then did the string test on my two older fully grown horses… guess what… 😳😳😳 it was bang on!
