Tried searching the forum, but it keeps playing up.

Our 'just turned' yearling is 14.2hh and still quite leggy. We've tried various string methods to estimate how tall he will end up being and they are coming out around 17.2 to 18h.

Does this sound about right? Or are these 'estimates' way off.....

Much will depend upon the breed of your chap (fast developer or slow to mature) but he's not going to end up small. That's for sure.

My homebred WBxTB filly was a good 14.2 as a yearling and is about to turn 4 and measures 16.1 on the wither and an inch or so bigger behind. She looks fabulous and has always had the best nutrition so genetically she's grown to her potential. Not sure when she'll finish growing, but she's taller than both her dam (15.1 TB) and sire (16.1 WB). Her dam's sire was 16.3 so I am assuming this is the height she may finish at.

If you know the height of your boy's ancestors, especially grandparents, it's often enlightening :)

Horses grow at all different rates but for a comparison for you my 2 year old wb x tb was 14.2 on his first birthday, he's now almost 16hh at 2, I'm expecting him to make 16.2 - 16.3

Our lad is a P.R.M (Menorquina), very rare breed in the UK, we imported him in October, so we've got very little to compare him to breed wise!

The sire was a good 17.2 and dam was around 16.3, his grandfather (from what we were told) was 17.1, just shorter than the sire, so if they get bigger down the generations a nice 17.3 could be expected lol

I'm sending some videos and pictures across to a specialist in the breed to see what they think.

Had never heard of the breed, have just googled it, very nice, like a friesan/andalucian type horse! Am a little confused as the breed height states: 'The Menorquina mares have an average height of 1.54-1.60 m. The Menorquina stallions have an average height of 1.62-1.65 m. (which is a max height of 16hh)

Taken from the site, is this out of date and they have now been breeding them alot bigger!!

Good luck anyway!!!

I think they've started breeding them bigger, and the gelds grow taller than the stallions, all to do with the hormones closing the growth plates quicker on the stallions (or something like that lol)

Here are some pictures of his sire, Milan:

For a rough guide, the guy standing next to him was a little taller than me, I'm 5'10. I would guess that would put his withers at about what 5'8 - 5'9, so 17 / 17.1hh ish

I think indications are your boy is going to make 17 hands plus, since his lineage suggests this.

The dam of the filly in my earlier post was 15.1, out of a 15.3 mare by a 16.3 sire. Her FULL brother made only 14.3, so the cross from these particular parents threw small offspring. They were all full TB BTW.

Although the grand-daughter will make 16.2 - 16.3 who knows what she'd produce herself if I bred her later on. Maybe another midget like her uncle!! LOL. Breeding can be soooo unpredicatable sometimes :)

Still think your chap is going to safely make 17+.
