How thick for your shavings bed?

How thick do people like their shavings beds?

Mine is about a foot thick at the moment but thinking it should be thicker! Friends bed is paper thin, far too thin in my opinion.

Any ideas?

How big is a foot in cms?? LOL

I think my bed is usually about 15-20cms but thats just a guess, i could be totally lying LOL

We have a very wobbly bed!!! inherited a deep litter straw on a dirt floor bed to which I added shavings! and I have no idea of the levelness of the floor - I think it drops away in steps!!!!! So have been gradually removing straw so in places her bed has potholes - she still poos in the same place every night and then goes to sleep with her face in her poo - well she is always plastered in it in the morning

Try and keep the shavings about 15cm deep

mine are about 2ocm ish I would say but I have never measured it! Pickle stable is slighly uneven though so in places its probably thicker

About 30cms, maybe slightly less so i should be ok then?

Mine looks like its fit for a king compared with others!!

But i want to be generous with it dont want any bruises etc!

Mine is about 20 cms - but this is for a 14.2. For a larger horse I would use more.

My test is to stab the shaving forks into the bed and if I don't hear a ping, it is thick enough. I don't find any scraped up patches or floor visable in the mornings.

I also love megazorb as this sets into a thick base and stops them getting on concrete.

I always think thicker the bed the better, you cant go wrong if its too thick!! I see to many not thick enough beds that makes me upset!

I think a bed should be about a foot or more or rule of the tumb a pitch forkish!

dont no how thick in cms but my mare is over knee deep in straw. looks so warm and cosy.

It should be thick enough that you can stand up and then drop down on your knees without it hurting.

I have rubber mats and a filthy filthy horse so mine is only about 5cm thick as I have to throw the whole floor away every time he stays in, but in general I think the thicker the better.

Mines really thick but only covers half of stable (stable used to be two stables so huge) and he always chooses to stand on woodchips (not surprisingly)

A really thick bed on thick rubber matting is an absolute waste of money. If you're on a concrete floor then yes have a thick bed, it will stop the horse knocking his hocks up when he gets up etc. With rubber there the shavings are there to soak up urine. I consider myself over generous with beding & he has about 10 cms.
My lad is comfortable, no injuries caused & he doesn't smell of urine like alot do.
