i think my horse is between two holes. one hole seems tight the next hole down seems loose. i'm warey of it being loose as a couple of weeks ago he got his matringale strap caught in his mouth.
He won't get a flash strap caught in his mouth.. and the space between two holes really is not alot, Personally Id look at the reason he is in a flash and decide.
thats what he came with when i bought him. he only needs a martingale when out hacking as he gets very excited at times and does little rears, which would be higher without. the previous owner said she didnt use the flash, but after he got the martingale strap in his mouth, i dont want it to happen again, so feel it best to use the flash.
If it is any help, have it tight enough to do the job, but loose enough so that the horse can adjust his mouth. I have mine with enough space to get a finger between the horse and the strap.
Unfortunately, my horse has got wise and puffs his cheeks up so I think it is tight enough and when we get back, its as loose as can be!! He is clever my horse.
If its only there to stop him grabbing it doesn't have to be tight. Just enough to touch all the way round and not move. We did this for scrooge as he kept taking chunks out of pole straps/reins/pair horse and anything else he could get him mouth on when driven!
I have all my flash straps tight, just so you know i also had a horse get his martingale caught in his mouth with said tight flash strap, if that it the problem you would probably be better to use a bib martingale.
I remember me and my knowlegable friend a few years back were taking a very strong five year old to the gallops, we were trying a loose ring snaffle to try to stop him setting and a super tight flash to stop him avading it. He just felt to young to 'bit up'. We took it in turns to get it as tight as it possibly could....! It worked and I even ended up having enough control to pop him over some cross country fences.
Which bit of his martingale strap is getting caught in his mouth? and which martingale are you using? I can't picture exactly what you mean and how the horse is managing to get bits of martingale in his mouth?
A flash should not be tight, the horse should be able to move his mouth, it should never be clamped shut.

Why is he in a flash?

I'm with Nailed here. Why a flash?
I understand that they have a use and can make a real difference but if he is only wearing it because a) thats how his previous owner did it and b) to stop him eating his martingale I would look at trying to not use it and sorting out the martingale.
