how to advertise/fill livery spaces? *DELETED*

When I was looking for a new yard I looked in the back of the regional equine magazine and on the boards at the local tack shops. I found the advert for my current yard at the local tack shop, so its def worth advertising there

I found mine on the internet actually, they had a really informative, easy to use and helpful website. I only looked online though as no one knew of any that had the criteria i was looking for - normally i would say word of mouth as its nice to know what a yard is like before you move there from someone elses perspective who actually has experienced being there/knows someone that has

Yes I can see your dilemma. However, my feeling is that you don't need to rush into getting someone else too fast coz its mega important you get the right person.

I've got two DIY liveries at my place and they're super; couldn't be better. However, one I had in the past was shall we say less than satisfactory; she had two young horses galloping all over the place cutting up the grass right through the winter, and then expected yours truly to be her personal slave i.e. get them in, be there for the vet/blacksmith, watering etc etc., but still paying DIY livery!! In the end she ended up upsetting not just my blacksmith but my vet as well which left a thoroughly sour taste, then thank God she took her arse in her hand and left - I later heard that she's at present doing the rounds of the livery yards seeing if there's some other sucker out there that will put up with her bolshy, ill-mannered horses and be her general slave and poo-picker.

The person I had before that was fantastic; worked for a vets (which was v. handy!!) plus she was such a lovely person with it and would always be helpful. Now she's got her own yard, bless her.

What you will find is that you will get a lot of timewasters if you're not careful (you've no doubt already discovered this!) - I had someone who wanted to look around a second time coz she "wasn't sure", when in reality she was probably only being nosy and going back to her own yard to gossip etc.

I have advertised at the local feed merchants/tack shop; I think the charges can largely vary depending on whether you're in good riding/hunting country or whatever.

Good luck!

I can't help with advertising and such but I can tell you how my prices are worked out at the small livery yard I am on.

I have 2 horses there on DIY. We have to keep them in in the winter and turn out is limited in the winter but they are out 24/7 from about April-October.

Anyway, I pay £17 each for a stable and grazing, use of an outdoor arena, a tack room and a heated rug room. I buy haylage or hay and bedding (shavings) from the YO.

Sometimes I work part time (I temp) and so on those days I turn my 2 out in the morning and get their stables ready and then pay £1 each for the YM to bring them in at lunch time. She picks out their hooves but doesn't change rugs. If the farrier is coming when I'm at work, the YM will see to them and I leave the money with the YO the night before.

So basically I pay £17 per week and then have 'ad-ons'. If I need them doing completely (if I'm on holiday) it is £5 per day if it's in the wintertime and £2 per day in the summertime when they're out. If I use the arena at night I pay £1 for the lights each time I use it.

Does that help?
