I'm getting ready for the thaw! I've bought pig oil - thought I would tip some into a jam jar & apply with paint brush. Would this be OK? I have a TB with sensitive legs, should I test it on him first? Anyone had a bad reaction to it? Thanks.

I put mine in an old washing up liquid bottle and use starting higher and working down towards the hoof. My boy didn't react to it - keeps the mud fever at bay wonderfully

I have a 20 litre can, I tip a mugful at a time into an old supplement bucket and apply from his knees down with a sponge. He is a fine TB, I did a test patch first and he was absolutely fine. Have to say it is brilliant stuff, really does work.

Paint on with a paint brush - do a test first as some have been known to react to it and don't really soak the hair as you would for a hairy horse.

Don't wash off, let mud dry and slip off and wipe the legs and apply every few days to keep the legs oily. Also can be put on necks etc via a cloth to keep mud slipping off, ditto tails and manes.

If you want ultimate protection, mix with sulphur as this is excellent for prevent skin problems and also curing them. Remove white gold - it will turn black. Yellow gold is fine.

As you have one not blessed with hair, I would also put some sudocream on the heels to have best protection possible.

I pour some from the big Pig Oil can into a small bucket and apply it to the legs with a small washing up sponge I keep specially for the job. Works well for me and keeps my hands nice and soft too

Thanks everyone. V excited about using it on neck too. Wonder if I could use it on the kids to keep them clean too! Theresa - could you please tell me more about sulpher - what sort? Where do you get it from & quantities to use in mixture?

Its used a a defence against mud! Apply and leave on and it repels mud and water

I use an old drinks bottle like sports people use, one with a little click lid that you pull up to open and push down to close - it allows you to squirt small amounts out and comb through the feathers. Start from the knee and work your way down to the feathers and through them all to the hoof

Well, that's what I do. Alot of people with show cobs and shires use pig oil and sulphur as it repelss mud, keep mites at bay and keeps feather fluffy white.
