As my current ride is my first proper horse, I'm very besotted with him, meaning lots of kisses and cuddles! But as an ex polo pony he was worked alot and didn't get the chance to be silly. But now he's with me - cue lots of grass and an old mare for company he thinks he's the boss and is often fizzy and bucky. Have been told before to get everything checked out and I am waiting for someone to come and look at his back, but he's not half as silly with others that are firmer and more assertive, but I don't know how to this, I feel like I am a push over.
Any help much appreciated (: xx

You should be thinking very positively and know what you want before you ask for it.

So don't think "okay, i kind of want to trot but not actually that bothered really.." then use your legs a bit and if it doesn't work carry on thinking "oh, i'll keep on at him and he'll do it in a minute..." because it'll just wind you both up.

It's kind of like asking a lazy teenage to clean their room. You can nag and nag all day, gently suggesting and half heartedly asking, but if you say it once, firmly, clearly and decisively, you've got a much better chance of it working first time round.

Polo ponies are fantastically responsive and I'm very jealous you own one! Or perhaps pretend to be a polo player for a few "schooling sessions" to remind him - lots of stop/starts, walk to canter, canter to halt, and halt/trot to gallop. Just to perk him up and get him lively and responding.

Hope this makes sense and is remotely useful!
