My 9 year old tb mare has been in work just over a year due to jumping injury. She is fit and can do hours of hacking, jumping etc.. However her muscle is lacking and her conformation is suffering because of this. Does anyone know of any good exercises or lunging routines to help her. Or is it just hours after hours of lunging and schooling! She is getting enough fodo allthough isn't up to weight at this time (grass very poor). Does anyone know of any supplements for weight gain and muscle gain please help>

hi. there is a supplement called baileys outshine - which used to be known as 'show and win' i think - i am using that on my seven year old stallion and have found its starting to make a difference already after 2 weeks. also, hill work, i find is very helpful for shoulders and quaters etc.
hope that helps a bit.

I dont understand the comment, 'her conformation is suffering because of this.' It is more likely to be the other way round, not muscling up because of a conformational defect. Minor problems can be alleviated by a bit of physio, apart from that lots of food and lots of work.

Make sure you keep the work and feed in balance (EG, cut right back on the feed especially if its a build up mix, if they have a day off). Our TB had an attack of tieing up earler this year (Azoturia) because we got it wrong.

It scared the hell out of me, cost a packet to get the vet out and it was a very unpleasant and painful experience for her.

I'm a great believer of Baileys low cal and dengie products for conditioning. Its worked wonders on my boy who was quiet poor when I first got him five years ago.

Also, I found that schooling and hacking has helped me. We had a year out last year and came back into work sept time and gradually started hacking first, then lessons. My instructor is fab and works the horse in a manner to avoid injury. Lots of leg yelds in and out of circles, then stretches etc etc. Ralph now has fantastic top line and my equine masseur has noticed a great difference.
