I always clip the heads in line with their cheek pieces, but thats because I have no patience for heads. If you are doing a hunter clip just chalk the leg lines and keep the clipper heads level.

I clipped my two for the first time this year. On one of them I did do the face - I know my Mum used to use smaller clippers for faces - e.g. dog clippers as this makes it easier to get into the angles of the face but I did it with normal clippers.
I basically just clipped as usual, running against the way the hair grows but taking lots of care. I didn't clip over the top of the eye socket & also didn't clip the whiskers off because my horse has fine hair on his nose anyway so it looks ok. I did clip the bearded bit off under his chin though obviously.
It looked alright when I'd done - there were a few tufty bits that I needed to go over again. Where there was an angle I just tried to stretch the skin out or move his head so that it was easier to get it all off. For ears I just pinched the ear together & ran the clippers up the front & then did the outsides of the ears as well. I never clip inside ears.
Hope that helps!
