How to deal with a horse who is fussy with head?

Hi all. Got a rising 4 gelding who for a while has been quite opinionated over his head.
I think he had poor handling as a foal as he's only just learning to respect personal space (he is much better at this than when he first came to me).

He is a nightmare, however, with his head. He hates it being touched. Not headshy, just gets bolshy when putting bridles on etc. If you tie him up and try and brush his mane he'll throw his head around. If you lead him and apply pressure to slow him down he'll throw his head and try and evade you.

Has anyone got any tips? I'm still trying to find out how he ticks so I can find what works best. He's not very responsive to voice.

Many thanks :)

My new mare was fussy with her entire body :o. I kept my hand there til she stopped fussing (biting, kicking and stamping) and as soon as she was still I removed it. Just built up from that and she is fine now into the fourth week of ownership!

Is he Irish? They are often ear twitched and don't aesily forget.

My mare is a rescue who was found with a seat belt tightened round her head. It took us several months to groom her head properly, a year or so to get a detachable bridle round her face and join it up and three years on we are as near normal as can be. It takes love and patience so they feel secure and know they can trust you.
