How to do a running plait...

Well if you can do the second plait you've got the technique. Now you just have to tighten it all up. Start with your three pieces of hair at the top of the neck, and each time you plait another piece in, pull the plait tighter, so that it stays up at the top of the neck. Its easier to keep higher like that on a medium length mane rather than a thick long one.

I find it's easier to stand on something and be higher than you normally would as its easier to pull it tight

Yep...get a stool and get yourself up above the neck to be able to get the right position.

I actually find it much easier than a long running plait BUT...the mane does need to be more medium length IME

I've always wanted to have a go at this but don't know where to start. Are there any videos online that give instructions? Also, my pony's mane is medium length. Is that sufficient?

if his mane is really thick, some andalusian horses manes are then divided so you end up with a plait either side of the neck, as the above have said, you need to keep the part you are holding really tight against the neck (the roots of the mane), and each piece you then add also as close to the top of the neck as possible, if you split the mane each side it makes the running plait part that much easier to keep tight as its not so thick. hope that makes sense. its just a matter of keep practicing, oh, and it does makes things a little easier if you are higher so if you can stand on a box or something so you are at least level with the mane whilst doing the plait.

As others have said, just pull it tighter so its closer to his crest : This one was easier as hes only 13.1hh

This one I stood on a stool, hes 17.3hh lol

I really need to get the hang of this too, when I was a kid I used to be brilliant at it - always looked super smart but I have now lost the knack.

I do agree it would probably be easier if my boys mane was a little thinner and shorter but I love his flowing locks so not really wanting to shorten it

Did try pulling tighter which worked up to a point but then it just started going down again His mane is medium/long length and isn't particularly thick for a cob.

If you find the plait is falling out, every now and then use a plaiting band tight against the neck to give the plait some security

Get yourself a stool for the height, try and keep a tight, even tension whilst plaiting and I found that egg white worked wonders to keep the plait in for the traditional pony I used to groom. Remember practice makes perfect!
