How to encourage wound healing?

I really need some advice please. My TB's latest sicknote attempt has been an abscess in her off hind hoof which exited from the coronet near the inside heel bulb. This was nearly a month ago and, although she is now sound (and bored :rolleyes: ), the exit wound is still the size of a 50p coin and she knocks the scab off it nearly every day. :(

I have tried keeping it bandaged but it rubs, tried an overrreach boot but that just seems to rub the dirt into it and still takes the scab off! I am cleaning it with saline every day (was syringing it into the actual hole but that is now filled in) and covering it with a manuka honey and zinc oxide cream which seems to help but it is taking SOOO long :(

I'm also not sure if she will grow a normal hoof again as there appears to be about an inch of coronet band totally absent :eek:

I would really appreciate any suggestions of how to speed up healing and / or protect it from damage. TIA
 
Thanks kirstykate :) I haven't tried that because I thought it would just come off as soon as it got wet but it's certainly worth a shot!
 
I've used Cut Heal with great success on deep, manky leg wounds and also on an abscess exit wound at the coronet band on the front of a front hoof. Also an injury prone TB!!

It's seriously gross sticky stuff, makes a bit of a mess but is very hard to get off.
 
I haven't used that in years beausmate! Although I seem to remember it stings a bit so not sure if I fancy getting kicked in the process - although that is probably preferable to another bl***y vets bill :rolleyes: :D
 
my vets have given me something called oily oily ointment, no idea what is in it but it helps cuts to heal as my boys fetlock/cannon injury was not closing up at all, and since using that it is much drier and closing up really well.
 
Trying to explain to my French vet the benefit of moist wound healing and hydro-colloid products with no success. Then discover the product he has prescribed is exactly that hydro-colloid paste.

Sadly we could not keep the product in the wound as the (cat) ripped off the bandage. We had more sucess with Sudocreme. Cling film helps keep wounds moist and prevents scan formation. Each time you remove a scan the skin underneath is damaged so you start again.

I know more about pressure sores and leg ulcers in people!! BUT nutritition is very important for wound healing, so I would bump up vits/mins and protein in diet.
 
My vet gave me some flamazine cream to help my boy's cut to heal, he'd cut his hock which needed stitches and was a little bit oozy after they came out. Seemed to work a treat, put the cream on twice a day and it's healed up lovely.
 
Pure aloe Vera gel is brilliant for speeding up healing but I would think difficult to keep enough on without covering. In this case I would use gunky sticky Stockholm tar providing there is no infection present and it's just a healing process needed.
