I need a new saddle for an 11.2 Welsh Sec A. She is quite unusual in that she is not that wide, and quite high withered. I think I probably need a 14" or 15".

I have been looking on ebay and there are a fair few wide ones, but so few narrow/medium ones. Also, I really don't want to pay more than £300, preferably less, as we won't have the pony for ever and the saddle will get a fair bashing from the children over the next few years! I guess I could go for a new Wintec or Thorowgood adjustable, but they are a little more than I wanted to spend.

Are there ANY fitters out there that carry a good range of second hand pony saddles? How on earth do you go about finding one without buying and reselling at least 10 ebay ones?? I'm in the north west.

Hi have a look on the robinsons web site , we had a little 11hh welsh A and i found one of there saddles fitted well (14in) she also was not a fattie and i think the saddle cost about £160 .

Hi sorry my mistake it was Shires and its a Hi-lite gymkhana saddle at £149.99 fitted really well and child did pony club and showing in it .
Hope this helps.

I am a specialist fitter of ponies and I'd not recommend those cheap saddles. Better to get a used synthetic etc. If you can find one of ours second hand, Native Pony, than all good - the Pony Club might work, the Mountain and Moorland might need a rear riser. You would be lucky to find one for £300 but worth a look around. If you would like advice on which model might be better do pm me and I can advise from photos.

Thanks sbloom. I did find your website, but I have to say I didn't look into the saddles much further as it says that they are specially made for wider horses and ponies. My sec A, although quite round of tummy and bottom, has quite high, sloping withers so needs a narrower saddle. That is what is causing the problem as almost all the 14" or 15" saddles I find are wide.

Thank you so much for the offer, and I may take you up on it if I can get some good photos of her.

Most Welsh As have withers so we're quite used to that kind of fit :). I am actually currently fitting an 18hh warmblood with an almost shark fin wither! Ponies are different to fit to horses and it's not always about the width of the tree, they need a certain approach and not just scaled down horse saddles.

We found a fab Barnsby Pony Club saddle for a 12.2 Caspian pony. He is not your 'typical' pony shape.

Laura at Bridlepath International fitted it, and wasn't fazed/phased(sp?) by it at all.
