May have been lucky but never come across this in 20 odd years.

Pony is 20, fine when you take him into stable to give him a feed OR you stay with him, but as soon as you leave, he panics, he runs in circles, tries to jump out or gives half rears, as soon as you go back to him he calms down, doesn't even try to barge out. He can see other horses, as soon as you bring him out or stay with him he is a dope on a rope, but would like to get him used as it is useful for him to be in at times.

Pony had same owner from birth til I had him, and never apparently went in a stable much went in a big barn.

Suggestions on how to get him to stay calm on his own? Yesterday I tried to leave him in as it was pelting down and he was shivering, but after an hour he had to go back out again as he was in such a tizz

At Kal's previous home he lived in a large, open-fronted stable - much like a field shelter only actually on the stable yard, with a penned off "yard" or corral in front so he could choose to be in or out.

Would that work?

My pony is 14 now and has been clostrophobic from the age of 3 when she was stabled 24/7 after being brought in from her herd to be started. She behaves exactly like your pony when I lleave her. I've had her 7 years in september aand whatever i've tried she has never changed her response to being confined. I've accepted it and we now have an agreement that iif she'll come inside for me, I won't leave her alone. Just shows how consistent our equine friends are :-)
