Hi, I am sharing a pony and just wondered if anyone has any advice on how to get him going we have tried using a whip, schooling whip, legs off legs on and all the methods we know just wondered if anyone has got any others?

Try tapping a short whip on your boots, make sure that allow him forwards when he goes. Is he lazy out hacking or just in school?

Transitions transitions transitions... Stop kicking all the time and to upset a lot of people WHACK HIMif he doesn't jump off your leg.. This of course assumes that you can keep your lower leg still between times...if you can't you'll be giving pony mixed signals...

Try 'wafting' the schooling whip by his sides- not touching him with it, just making a noise by moving it backwards and forwards- might need quite long 'swings' to have an effect if he's like my Lad! Also, keep his head up, even if it means your hands are 'too' high.

Have you tried (correctly used) spurs? My horse responds better to these than a whip.

Exactly this ^^^ never underestimate the power of transitions. It will also help to focus the horse on you out in the field if he is liable to get fizzy and want to go.

Sorry I couldn't do a long reply earlier as on my way out. It sounds like some lessons with a good instructor would help, both to get him more forward in school and to get him more under control in field, ie listening to you more. I totally agree with others to do loads of transitions as this will help with both problems. Good luck xx

Lots of transitions, and if you do use the whip and he goes forward be ready for it and make sure you don't instinctively pull back on the reins. As long as reacts to it and goes forward, let him go at whatever pace he's chosen for a few strides pat him and then ask him to cone back to the pace you want.

I got a very lazy girl, but she IS SO much better now than a year ago. I had weekly schooling lessons and my instructor told me, one chance with the legs and if she don't go forward, big kick and a smack at same time. She said its better than nagging at them all the time. And I found it brill, she is still lazy but walks out a lot faster than she used to. Sometimes I don't even need to give her the whip, but the feel of my arm moving out to give her one makes her lunge forward!!
Instructor used to help by using lunge whip and I now wear spurs when schooling only.

Good luck because I know how bloody frustrating it is!!!

Have you considered all the possible causes for his laziness and then running off? i.e. discomfort from tack, teeth, health issue, etc.

thanks for all the ideas i will give them a go, now having a lesson on friday so hopefully that should help too.:)

Lessons would definitely be a help. And so would assessing if there is a reason behind the way the horse goes. Schooling is treating a symptom but you also need to treat the cause (if the cause is other than lack of or inappropriate training or the rider)
